I would like to thank all my friends who kept telling me that I should write DM Fan fictions besides coming up with ideas for others to write. This is a Steve hurt/comfort and/or a Steve/Mark Relationship Story.

Broken Promise

Mark went back into the beach house after hours of driving around, visiting friends, going to the movies, anything to keep him away from the beach house. After the movie ended he looked at his watch and noticing that it was after 1 a.m. he felt safe knowing that Steve would not be up. Just to be safe he set his alarm clock so he could be out the door before Steve woke up and again asked him when he was going to help clean out the garage so he could get his car in. Mark loved his son but he just couldn’t part with any of his possessions.

The alarm clock went off and Mark got out of bed fixed Steve and himself some breakfast. He put Steve’s in the refrigerator hoping this would soothe his son. And then rushed out to the hospital to finish paperwork before it was time to start his rounds. He was still afraid to face his son.

Steve woke up went upstairs and noticed his father was gone. He opened the refrigerator and saw the breakfast his father left for him.

?

Before Steve left for work he called his captain.

?

“Captain any word on who has been sending me those threatening messages?”

?

“No, Lt. Look are you sure you don’t want to fill your dad and friends on what has been happening?”

?

“Yes, I’m sure. None of the messages have said anything about my dad or friends there’s no need to worry them.”

?

“Ok Lt. if you say so.”

?

“Thanks Captain.”

?

“Oh, I almost forgot Lt. I was about to call you the meeting that was scheduled for this afternoon has been changed for this morning I hope you got all the files ready.”

?

“Oops! I was counting on having time before the meeting to get them ready. I’ll be ready to leave in a few minutes and get to work on them I should still be able to have the files ready on time if I take the shortcut to work.”

?

Steve hurriedly got ready for work and drove using the shortcut. As he was driving around the turns on the hill he tried to brake only the brakes wouldn’t work. He tried to slow down in order to jump out but he couldn’t do it. Suddenly he went crashing through a guardrail over and over the car spun down the hill. When it was stopped everything including Steve Sloan was quiet.

Hours later back at Community General

Mark is just finishing up his rounds ready to go to lunch. He sees Captain Newman. “Hello Captain what’s up?”

?

“That’s what I want to know. You haven’t seen your son today have you?”

?

“No, Mark says sheepishly I snuck out. I didn’t want to have to clean out the garage. ..What’s wrong?”

?

“Steve was supposed to be in to work this morning for a very important meeting. I called him and he said he was coming right away. He said he’d take the shortcut.”

?

“If he took the shortcut he should have been to work hours ago,” Mark says worriedly for the first time realizing something was very wrong. “Come on I know the shortcut Steve uses we’ll drive the route Steve uses and see if we can see him.”

?

“Ok but we’ll use my police car just in case.”

?

Mark and Captain Newman drove on the same route that Mark knew Steve would take when he used this particular shortcut. They spotted the broken guardrail and stopped the car. They got out and looked around. They went to the edge and Mark was the one that spotted Steve’s car first. “OH NO!” Mark starts to climb down when the captain stops him.

?

“Wait Mark it’s too dangerous!”

?

“That’s my son down there!”

?

“He could have gotten out.”

?

“No I know he’s down there now let me go!”

?

“Mark the best thing to do is get the rescue workers over here they have the equipment as well as the training to handle this.”

?

“You’re right” Mark sighed but I’m not going to sit here and do nothing.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out his cell phone.

?

Jesse heard his beeper go off and went for a phone. He recognized the signal as coming from Mark and rang Mark’s cell phone. “Mark what is it, what’s wrong?” Jesse says hurriedly knowing something had to be wrong.

?

“I’m over here on Malibu Hill Steve’s been in an accident we’re waiting for the rescue workers to arrive. Jesse get things ready for him.”

?

“Ok Mark.” Jesse hurriedly got a trauma room prepared for his best friend.

?

Captain Newman had called the rescue workers while Mark was talking to Jesse. They arrived and were now using a stokes as well as ropes and other gear to climb down the hill. They opened the car. After first making sure Steve had no obvious back injuries they pulled him out and laid him on the stokes securing him. They noticed that besides some bleeding on his forehead his legs were badly damaged. “This doesn’t look good.” One of them mentioned.

After Steve was brought back up Mark did a quick examination as he tried to talk to Steve to try to get a response. “Steve can you hear me Steve?..Please son wake up.” He noticed the head wound and the badly damaged legs. “Oh, my.. get him to Community General Dr. Travis is waiting. I’m coming with my son” Mark said forcefully not allowing anyone to talk him out of it.

“I understand Mark I’ll be down to Community General as soon as I finish up here.” As the ambulance sped off with Steve still unconscious and Mark worried about his son Captain Newman went to the rescue workers “stay here until CSU and the police mechanics have arrived I want the Lt.’s car and everything around here gone over thoroughly.” The captain called CSU and the police mechanics with the same instructions. After making sure that his instructions were being carried out Captain Newman said I’ll be at Community General page me just as soon as you find anything.. no matter how remote.

The ambulance had arrived and Jesse was waiting. Jesse swiftly and efficiently got Steve out of the ambulance with Mark close behind. “Mark you can’t come you know that” Jesse tried to reason with Mark. “I know..I just wish Amanda could be here. Please Jesse do all you can.” “Mark you know I will.”

?

Mark walked into the doctors’ lounge for the long wait wishing Amanda could be with him for support. While he was waiting Captain Newman showed up. “Any news Mark?”

?

“No Jesse is still in there with him. Do you have any idea what happened?”

?

“No..not exactly but we’re working on it.”

?

“What do you mean ‘not exactly’?” Mark said.

?

Captain Newman sighed and said “I knew we shouldn’t keep this from you. Lt... Steve has been receiving numerous death threats over the last week at work. Much more than usual.”

?

“Steve never mentioned any of this to me.”

?

“I know I tried to convince Steve that he should let you know but he didn’t want to worry you. He said the caller never mentioned you or Jesse or Amanda so he figured there was no sense you both worrying.”

?

Just then Captain Newman’s pager went off. “Can I use a phone Mark?” “Sure you can use the one by the nurse’s station down the hall.”

?

“Thanks Mark. I’ll let you know more when I do.”

?

Captain Newman picked up the phone at the nurse’s station and dialed. “Yes any news…..You’re positive?… Ok good work keep me posted.”

?

After he got off the phone he saw Jesse walking up the hall with his head bowed down. Captain Newman rushed to Jesse. “Dr. Travis.. What’s the word? I know it’s not good by your expression.”

?

Jesse sighed. “We tried everything we could… Steve’s legs were too badly damaged….. He will never walk again.”

?

“Oh.. May I see him? It’s police business.”

?

“He was just coming out of the anesthesia when I left.. He doesn’t know yet.”

?

“I promise I won’t say anything and I’ll only be in there a couple of minutes I promise. What room is he in?”

?

“OK.. It does give me time to get my thoughts together to tell Mark he’s in Room 310.? .. And then it’s the hard part how to tell Steve he will never walk again.”

?

Captain Newman and Jesse parted Captain Newman to talk to Steve for a few minutes and Jesse to gather his thoughts to talk to Mark.

?

Captain Newman came quietly into the room in case Steve was asleep. Steve was awake but groggy from the anesthesia. “Good afternoon Lt.. Steve I’ll only be a few minutes I promise.”

?

“Can you tell me what happened?”

?

“I was going over some of the twists and turns on Malibu Hill I tried to break when I noticed I was going too fast only the brakes wouldn’t work and I hit the guardrail.”

?

Captain Newman was going to ask Steve if he knew of any time or place where his car could have been tampered with but Steve was already asleep.

?

Jesse finally gathered his thoughts and went to see Mark.

?

Jesse entered the doctors’ lounge took a deep sigh and approached Mark. “Mark, Jesse said gently. I did everything I could.. I really did.”

?

“I know you did Jesse just tell me.. Please?”

?

Jesse sighed and said “besides the concussion Steve will never walk again.”

?

“Oh dear, no!” Mark’s heart was heavy knowing what this would mean to his son who enjoyed riding motorcycles, surfing and other outdoor activities that required two legs.. Two working legs. “Jesse please come with me I.. Can’t… do this without you.”

?

“Of course Mark he’s in room 310 we’ll go together.”

?

They walked out of the doctors’ lounge to be met by Captain Newman. “Mark can I see you for a minute?”

?

“I was just about to go see my son, Captain.. But I do want to know what happened.”

?

“This won’t take long and it’s important. I was going to ask Steve but he fell asleep.”

?

“Ok Captain.”

?

“I checked with the garage mechanics at work they said given the threats against the Lt.’s life they took special care to go over his car before he left from work last night. Can you tell me where Steve had his car yesterday and if you think anyone could have had time to tamper with it?”

?

“What do you mean?”

?

“Mark we are certain that Steve’s car was sabotaged. There was definite signs.”

?

“I can’t believe it! Steve’s car was in the driveway.. He asked me to help him clean the garage so he could move his car in. I promised I would but I snuck out.”

?

“Ok that explains a lot. Give Steve my best Captain Newman” said as he left.

?

Mark and Jesse were about to go inside but Jesse gestured to a small corner so they wouldn’t disturb Steve. He didn’t want Steve to hear what he was about to say. “You mean because of some silly practical joke of yours my best friend is crippled for life!” Jesse said angrily.

?

“Jesse please.”

?

“NO Mark. My best friend is lying in the hospital crippled because of you.? ..I never want to have anything to do with you ever again.. Dr. Sloan!”

?

“Jesse please I understand how you feel but please we need to help my son.”

?

“You understand?.. I don’t believe you.”

?

“Please Jesse.”

?

Jesse sighed and said “Ok but this is only for Steve’s sake Dr. Sloan.”

?

Mark and Jesse entered Steve’s room. Steve was still sleeping peacefully. Mark and Jesse sat on opposite sides. Mark too afraid to look at his son and face the guilt he felt or look at Jesse and see the anger in his face. Mark knew that Jesse had every right to be angry.

?

“Why did I have to leave and not help Steve why? It was just a practical joke. A silly, harmless practical joke. No one was supposed to get hurt. If I could take anything back I would stay in the garage all day and night if I had to until Steve’s car would fit in the garage.”

?

Jesse’s thoughts were centered on his growing hatred of Mark Sloan for what had happened to his best friend. “I’ll never forgive Dr. Sloan ever.”

?

Mark and Jesse sat for about an hour with their own personal thoughts. Mark once in awhile stealing a quick glance at Jesse, still afraid to look at Steve, only to see pure hatred directed at him every time.

?

Finally Steve woke. Mark cautiously approached Steve knowing he owed his son the truth. Jesse also came near Steve. Not for Mark’s sake but his best friend’s.

?

“Hi,” Steve said weakly “guess I landed in here again. What’s the damage this time?”

?

Jesse started to answer, Mark too upset to speak, you have a concussion…. And…. Words failed Jesse he couldn’t get the words ‘you’re crippled Steve’ to come out.

?

“Dad what’s going on?”

?

Mark tried to speak knowing he owed Steve and Jesse. “Steve I’m sorry.. So sorry. Jesse did everything he could.”

?

“Please.. I know he did. Will one of you two please tell me what’s wrong” Steve said starting to panic.

?

Mark not wanting Jesse to be force to use a sedative on his son said. “Steve please try to understand. …Your legs were badly damaged in the accident.. You will never walk again.”

?

Steve laid there staring into space not wanting to believe what he just heard.

?

After a few minutes Steve said “how did it happen?”

?

“What do you mean,” Jesse said finally able to talk again.

?

“I mean the Captain was in here before I fell asleep he was asking me questions but I fell asleep before he could ask them all.”

?

“Perhaps.. Dr. Sloan would like to tell us,”? Jesse said anger starting to build up inside him again over what was happening to his best friend.

?

“I’m sorry Steve.. I’m so sorry I didn’t mean for anyone to get hurt.. Especially you. I love you Steve.”

?

“Tell me Dad!” Steve said forcefully.

?

“It looks like someone tampered with your car while it was parked in the driveway last night.”

?

“You mean because my car was left all night in the driveway I’ll never walk again!” Steve said finally understanding the impact of his dad’s practical joke. I HATE YOU. I HATE YOU. Steve shouted.

?

Jesse finally spoke. “I understand how you feel Steve believe me.” Turning to Mark he said “Dr. Sloan you’ve done enough damage. Get out of my patient’s room! Why don’t you try a practical joke on Eddie Gault?”

?

I HATE YOU. I HATE YOU. The words spun around in Mark’s head like a broken record. Tossing and turning in the sheets Mark finally woke up. He looked at his alarm clock and sighed. He still had time.

?

Steve woke up got ready and went upstairs to have breakfast with his dad before going to work. He looked in the kitchen. “This is strange, thought Steve, Dad should be up by now.” Just then Steve heard a noise in the garage and goes out to investigate.

?

Steve opens the garage and sees his dad busy cleaning the garage. “Dad what are you doing? I thought you didn’t want to part with any of these.”

?

“I promised I would. A promise is a promise especially if it’s made to my son.”

?

“Thanks Dad. This means a lot to me.”

?

Just then the telephone rings. Dad let me get the phone and then I’ll be out here to help you.”

?

“Ok Steve,” Mark said as he kept busy cleaning the garage.

?

Steve picked up the phone and said “Hello Steve Sloan.”

?

Lt. the meeting that was scheduled for this afternoon has been changed for this morning I hope you got all the files ready.”

?

“Oops! I was counting on having time before the meeting to get them ready. I’ll be ready to leave in a few minutes and get to work on them I should still be able to have the files ready on time if I take the shortcut to work.”

?

“Ok Lt. Don’t be late.”

?

“I won’t Captain.”

?

Steve goes back into the garage. “I’m sorry dad I’m going to have to leave. That was the captain. A meeting that was scheduled for this afternoon has been changed to this morning and I have to have time to finish the files. I’ll have to take the shortcut to work.”

?

“Wait Steve!”

?

“Dad I told you I’ve got to go. I’ll help you as soon as I can.”

?

“Steve please check your car before you go.”

?

“Dad I don’t have time. Don’t worry the garage mechanics at work checked it before I brought it home.”

?

“Please Steve.. For me?”

?

“Ok Dad.” Steve sighs.

?

Steve goes out to the car and starts checking his car. He checks under the hood, inside the car, the back of the car, and then slides underneath to check there.

?

In a few minutes Steve comes back into the garage.

?

“Dad how did you know?”

?

“Know what Steve?”

?

“Someone has tampered with my car. If I had driven it I could have been seriously hurt. I’ll have to call the captain and tell him. My car needs a thorough going over. I’ll have to get Tanis to get the files ready. I owe her again.”

?

“It was a dream Steve just a dream. Mark says trying more to convince himself then Steve. Steve before you go to make those phone calls would you please tell me why you didn’t tell me you’ve been threatened?”

?

“Dad I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Steve says not knowing how his dad did these things. He was pretty sure he hadn’t given his dad any reason to suspect that anything was wrong.

?

“I had a dream Steve that someone had been threatening you but you didn’t want to worry me.”

?

“Well that was some dream! You wouldn’t perhaps know whose responsible for the threats would you?”

?

“Why don’t you try a practical joke on Eddie Gault.” Mark hears Jesse’s angry voice from his dream.

?

“Dad?” Steve says when he notices his dad has been silent for too long.

?

“Eddie Gault.”

?

“Ok Dad I trust you. I’m going to make a few phone calls and see if we can get any proof.? ..Dad you know I’m going to be busy but why don’t Jesse, you and I take some time out this afternoon and have lunch at Bob’s?”

?

“I’m sorry Steve. As much as I would love to have lunch with my son and Jesse I’m not leaving this garage until it’s clean. Mark said as he once again set out to clean the garage like he had promised.

Author’s Note: Sorry about the scare with Steve permanently disabled. I just thought it would put a scare into Mark if he knew he was responsible for Steve being injured and Steve and Jesse both hated him because of it.
