Hawaii Bash ‘em Style by
Steve comes into Mark’s office with a happy grin on his face.
“Well Steve I haven’t seen you this happy in years. What’s going on?”
“I’ve been asked to go undercover for a few days.”
“And that makes you smile like the Cheshire cat?”
“Dad you don’t understand the assignment is in Hawaii.”
“Hawaii?”
“Yes!”
“I’ve been asked to infiltrate a drug ring.”
“Steve that’s dangerous.” Mark said not for the first time wishing Steve had not chosen to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps.
“Relax Dad I’m playing a dealer who has better sense then to use the stuff himself.”
“But Steve it’s still dangerous.”
“Dad it’s only for a few days. I’ve been assured that they almost have enough evidence to bust the ring ride open. And then I have a few days to enjoy Hawaii before I head back home.
-----
While Steve and Mark were talking another conversation elsewhere was taking place.
“You’ve got everything?”
“Yes, I’ve planted drugs, money in the Lieutenant’s locker and his home. There’s enough evidence to convince IA that the Lieutenant has turned crooked. Not to mention the plane ticket to Hawaii. That was a brilliant suggestion making the Lieutenant think he was helping to crack a drug ring.. Our drug ring! Now when IA finds out he’s in Hawaii they will think that he’s on the lam.
-----
A couple of days have past and Steve is already for his ‘undercover assignment’. Mark has driven Steve to the airport and now they are spending some nice father and son time while waiting for Steve’s plane to be ready to board. Finally after letting those with small children, the disabled, elderly, and others who may need extra time to board everyone else was allowed to board. “This is it Dad bye!”
“Steve try to call me when you can?”
“Sure Dad.” Steve says as he waves goodbye.
------
Mark returns to his office only to be confronted by Chief Masters and Captain Newman.
“What’s going on?” Mark asks. Startled by the appearance of these two men now that his son was away for a few days he saw no reason for his son’s superiors to see him. Mark wasn’t helping on any case right then.
“Where’s the Lieutenant?” said the Chief.
“He’s on his way to Hawaii. The undercover assignment you put him on Captain.”
“I didn’t put him on any undercover assignment.” The Captain assures everyone.
“I think we have a big problem.” Masters stated. Calm as ever.
Mark increasingly afraid for his son said “would one of you please let me know what’s going on. I’ve got a feeling you two know a lot more of what’s going on then I do. Steve’s in danger isn’t he.” Mark said not as a question but a statement. He knew his son was in peril without them telling him.
“Dr. Sloan for sometime we have been sure that there are a group of officers who have started their own drug ring. That they have recruited people elsewhere like in Hawaii to work for them. Because these men are cops they know first hand when raids are supposed to happen. They help their connections avoid the raids in exchange for profits. And they have people like doctors, lawyers, and other professional people that work for them.” Chief Masters said.
“And there is enough evidence to suggest that the Lieutenant is the ringleader.” Captain Newman finally spoke up.
“Evidence? What kind of evidence could there be on my son?” Mark said puzzled.
“We had an anonymous tip to check the Lieutenant’s locker and your house Doctor. We found enough proof for IA to start criminal proceedings against your son. The only way that Steve can help himself is if he heads for home right away and turns himself in. We know your son is innocent. We are holding onto the evidence for twenty-four hours after that we will have no choice.” Chief Masters stated. Masters felt bad. He liked the lieutenant even though he would not show it.
-----
“They are onto us. Chief Masters and Captain Newman already have Mark Sloan notified. Soon he will contact his son and then the Lieutenant will return and we can no longer use him as a scapegoat.
“We will have to arrange a little accident for the Lieutenant. I want him to get a welcome to Hawaii he will never forget.”
“I’ll organize everything.”
-----
Mark was talking to Jesse and Amanda about the situation. “Mark we have to warn Steve right now.”
“Jesse we can’t. Remember Steve is still on the plane. Because he’s undercover or believes that he is he’s not carrying his cell phone. Also I’m sure he wouldn’t be carrying any ID. At least not until he was given orders that they were all set to bust the drug ring ride open.
“Won’t he call home as soon as he checks into his hotel Mark?”
“Steve’s on his way to Hawaii Amanda do you really think the very first thing Steve is going to do is check into his hotel and call his old man?”
“Well what can we do?” Jesse said frustrated at not being able to do anything to warn his best friend.
“I’m heading out right now. I know the hotel where Steve is booked at. I’ll explain the situation to him and we’ll take the next flight out.”
“Mark how are you going to get a flight this fast without a reservation?”
“Amanda I have some people in the flight industry that owes me favors. I’ll just call on them. Jesse take over my shift for me. I should be back soon. Amanda could you drive me to the beach house to pack and then the airport? I’ll make some phone calls while I’m getting ready.”
“Ok Mark.” Jesse and Amanda said almost simultaneously.
While Jesse finished seeing Mark’s patients Amanda drove Mark to the beach house so that he could pack. Mark hurriedly packed calling in the favors that would get him to take the next flight out to Hawaii and bring back his son. Mark was certain it would be easy. All he had to do was go to Steve’s hotel ask for Steve’s room number and then wait for Steve to show up.
-----
Steve’s flight had landed at Honolulu International Airport and he had been greeted by lots of Hawaiian girls putting leis around his neck giving him kisses and welcoming him to Hawaii. “I can get used to this! thought Steve. “This is wonderful, I’m so glad I was given this undercover assignment.”
Steve was making his way to the baggage check out when some hired flunkies met up with him. They had been faxed his picture and knew exactly whom they were looking for. “Hello Steve Wilson we’ve been told to personally greet you here. Lets get you checked out of here and then we can meet some friends of ours before you get checked into your hotel.” Steve had been used to undercover assignments and so had no problem in getting used to his ‘last name’.
They headed into the parking garage got into the rental car and drove out of the airport. After driving for awhile they looked around took a little detour made sure there was no one following them and no one in the area. The driver stopped the car. “This is where our friends told us to meet you.” Steve looked around. “There’s no one here.” “Exactly Lieutenant no one here that can help you.” Steve knew that somehow he had been set up from the very beginning. Whom and why he was set up he didn’t know.
Steve threw the first punch but was quickly out matched as he was hit repeatedly on the head, the ribs, until finally Steve had enough and had sank to the ground barely conscious. One of the men took out a hypodermic needle and was about to administer it to Steve. “No wait another one quickly drew his arm away. We weren’t supposed to make it look like a drug deal gone bad just a simple mugging.” “You’re right but I have to do something.” He gave Steve one final kick on the head which rendered Steve unconscious. Then they took Steve’s wallet and took off in the rental car with Steve’s bags and drove off. Leaving Steve alone unconscious and bleeding.
-----
While this had been going on Mark had been able to get his flight. Amanda had wished him good luck, and he was in the airplane with thoughts of Steve and the danger he was in going around in his head. “Oh Steve please be ok, Please son! I’m on my way.”
The plane landed and Mark was also greeted with pretty women putting leis around his neck. Unlike Steve Mark wasn’t impressed. He was too concerned about his son. Mark thanked the young ladies and took off to the baggage claim area. After Mark had checked his baggage out he had went to the rental agency and had rented a car to drive him to Steve’s hotel. Just a hunch Mark asked the clerk if a Steve Wilson had been there. The man asked him why and Mark showed him his medical ID saying it was vital that he find this man. A medical emergency. Mark didn’t know how many people were on the payroll of the drug dealers and he didn’t want to get his son hurt by letting anyone know who Steve really was. The man looked on the computer for the information. No I’m sorry there is no Steve Wilson on the computer. Mark thought it odd, but maybe Steve was using a different kind of transportation, or a different rental agency. Mark knew he didn’t have the time to check them all out. The best thing to do Mark knew was to go to the hotel and to wait for his son in his hotel room.
-----
While Mark was on his way to his hotel Steve had been found. It was pure luck that Steve had been found when he was, a family taking their first vacation in years had taken the wrong turn to their hotel and had gotten lost. The husband who was driving had refused to ask for directions. They saw Steve near the roadside and stopped the car. They got out of their car cautiously and looked at the stranger. He was obviously hurt and in need of medical attention. Since they didn’t know their exact location they weren’t sure how they were going to get help. Just then their teenage son said “Dad I remember we passed what looked like a police station a mile back.” “Son if you saw it why didn’t you tell us. They could have helped us figure out where we were.” “Dad you told us to be quiet you didn’t need any help.” “Ok, son you’re right I did. Look how would you like to help us out? I don’t want to leave your mother and little sister alone while we go to the police station you got your driver’s license last week. Drive to the police station and tell them we need help.” The teenager didn’t have to be asked twice to get to use the car.
The teenager was more then happy to get to use the family car. He drove to the police station, walked in and asked for help. The police were happy to help this young man. Especially when they heard that someone was injured.
However, there were two policemen that weren’t so eager. They had hired the two flunkies and were hoping that Steve would not be found at least until it was too late and that his death would appear to be just another mugging. They stepped out of the way of their fellow officers and went some place more private. “Look, it can still work out one of them said.” “How, when Lt. Sloan recovers he will know right away it was a set up, and he’ll leave the island and all hopes of framing him will be over.” “All we have to do is keep him from leaving for a few days and to keep his father from finding out. Contact Dr. Lewis tell him we have a job for him to do.”
Dr. Lewis was on the payroll also he had liked living in Hawaii so he was willing to do whatever his bosses told him to do. He was told to keep a certain Lt. Sloan from leaving the island for a few days. As Steve was transferred to a hospital room and Dr. Lewis tended to his needs looking very concerned whenever he had someone with him that is. He wondered how he was to keep his patient from leaving when he woke up.
-----
Mark went to the hotel where Steve told him he would be staying. He went to the front desk and asked for Steve Wilson’s room number. The clerk looked at his computer and said “I’m sorry sir there is no Steve Wilson here. He is registered but according to this he hasn’t shown up yet. Mark didn’t like the sound of this. It was starting to look like Steve was jumped from the moment he had landed in Hawaii. Mark decided he had no choice he was going to have to make contact with the police department back home. Due to Detective Tanis Archer being away visiting relatives the only ones he could truly trust was Captain Newman and Chief Masters.
-----
Steve woke up and looked around him he didn’t recognize anything but he could sense he was in a hospital room. How he knew he was in a hospital he had no idea. He looked at the doctor and the nurse attending him and said “Where am I… who am I?”
Dr. Lewis couldn’t believe his luck. “ This will be easier then I thought!” He reflected. “Nurse could you please leave the room so I can talk to the patient in private?” “Yes doctor,” the nurse said as she quietly slipped out of the room accidentally leaving the door just a crack open.
“Hello my name is Dr. Lewis, and your name is Steve Wilson. You are here because you are a drug dealer. A Steve Sloan bought some drugs from you overdosed and died. His father Mark Sloan swore he’d get you and make you pay. Unfortunately he almost succeeded. It was him that beat you up. If it wasn’t for that family getting lost I’m afraid he would have succeeded. I don’t condone what happened but I don’t like vigilantes taking the law in their own hands. Don’t worry I won’t let Mark Sloan come anywhere near you.”
“But how can I stay out of Mark Sloan’s way when I don’t even know what he looks like?” “Here’s a picture of him,” Dr. Lewis handed Steve a picture. “He looks like a nice man.” “Well looks can be deceiving. He calls himself a doctor.”
“…Doctor Lewis my head hurts really bad is there something you can give me to help?”
“I’m sorry Mr. Wilson there’s nothing I can give you to help your headache. But don’t worry there’s nothing to worry about.”
Dr. Lewis pretended Steve was asleep and left word that his patient was not to be disturbed under any circumstances for a couple of hours. Then he went about acting as if he was searching for information of who his patient really was.
-----
After talking to Captain Newman and telling him that Steve never checked in Mark walked out of the hotel and started looking around. Hawaii was very beautiful but even its splendor couldn’t keep Mark from worrying about his son.
Mark decided he had no choice he had to contact the local police for assistance. He had avoided asking for help at first but decided he had no choice. But he decided not to tell them who he really was. He went to the police department. “Hello my name is Mark Davis. I’m looking for a friend of mine Steve Wilson. We were supposed to meet in his hotel room and then go out to dinner but he never showed up.”
“How do you expect us to help you?” One of the officers asked gruffly.
“Well I was wondering if I could fill out a missing person’s report on my friend.”
“Is your friend over 18?”
“Yes.”
“Then I’m afraid we can’t help until 24-hours have past. Look have you tried the hospital? Maybe your friend has been hurt and he was taken there.”
Mark asked for directions to the nearest hospital. The two police officers who were given faxes containing pictures of Steve, Mark, Jesse and Amanda knew right away who Mark really was. They called Dr. Lewis and warned him that Mark Sloan was on his way. Dr. Lewis quickly came to talk to Steve. “Mr. Wilson I just found out that Mark Sloan is on his way. I know you are still very sore from the beating he gave you but you need to get out of here. I’ll help.”
“You’ll help me? Why?”
“I told you Mr. Wilson I don’t like what happened with Mark Sloan’s son but I won’t allow a vigilante to come in here and hurt and possibly kill a patient of mine. Now come on we have to hurry we don’t have much time.”
Dr. Lewis soon had Steve in a wheelchair and was taking him down the elevator. He had informed the nurses that he was taking his patient down himself for an examination. They went through the back entrance of the hospital. Soon after Mark came in through the front entrance.
Mark goes up to the reception area. “Hello I’m looking for a ..friend of mine Steve..Wilson I wonder if he’s been admitted?”
The receptionist looked at her notes. “Lets see, oh yes. We have a Steve Wilson suffering from a severe beating. He was originally brought in as a John Doe but Dr. Lewis was able to obtain fingerprints and find out his name is Steve Wilson. Sorry nobody told you about your friend but your friend’s wallet was stolen so he didn’t have any ID and your friend has amnesia. Poor man.”
The news that Steve was severely beaten and was suffering from amnesia was almost too much for him. Only the need to get to Steve as soon as possible helped him get through the next question he had to ask without breaking down and sobbing. “What room number is my friend in?”
“Your friend is in room 215 you just make a right when you get to the second floor nurse’s desk.”
“Thank you.” Mark said and rushed to the elevator.
Mark came out of the elevator and rushed right to the nurse’s desk. He had to make sure Steve was able to have visitors before he rushed in. “Hello I’m Mark Sloan. I’m looking for a friend of mine.. Steve Wilson. I was told he was in room 215 I wonder if it would be ok to see him?”
“Yes, sir go right ahead said Nurse Leia.
“Hold it.” said Nurse Kalea coming from out of a patient’s room.
“What?” Mark was startled.
“Nurse Leia I heard Dr. Lewis and Mr. Wilson talking Mr. Sloan is the one that beat Mr. Wilson up. Call security. Hurry!”
Nurse Leia picked up the telephone and dialed for security. Mark wasn’t going to stand for this nonsense. He dashed for room 215 walked inside and found an empty room. Mark was heartbroken so close yet so far. Just then security came into the room and escorted Mark Sloan to a secure wing in the hospital until the police could come.
Mark was arrested for the brutal beating of Steve Wilson. Mark couldn’t believe it, but he was in for a bigger surprise.
-----
Dr. Lewis and Steve had arrived at the doctor’s home. Steve was very impressed a large home, a golf course, and more important to Steve a private entrance to the beach. Although why Steve should like the beach so much he didn’t know. Dr. Lewis pretended to care for Steve’s needs and put him in his guest room. As he was tending to Steve’s needs the telephone rang.
Nurses Leia and Kalea had called Dr. Lewis at his home when they found out Steve Wilson wasn’t in his room or anywhere in the hospital and the last one known to have seen him was Dr. Lewis. Nurse Leia said “Sir did you take Mr. Wilson out of the hospital?” “Yes, nurse I did. When I heard that Mark Sloan was coming I just couldn’t let him get to my patient again. I know it’s not protocol but sometimes you have to break the rules. I was afraid for Mr. Wilson’s safety.” “I agree” said Nurse Kalea “but Doctor you don’t have to worry about Mr. Wilson’s safety.” “What do you mean?” said Dr. Lewis. “Dr. Lewis Mark Sloan has been arrested.
This was great news for Dr. Lewis. He came into the room where Steve was asleep. “Wake up Mr. Wilson I have great news.” “What?” Steve asks. “They’ve arrested Mark Sloan for your beating. Remember I showed you a picture of the man who beat you.” “Yes, I remember. Steve had been trying to remember who he was. He remembered an old man with gray hair and a moustache. Then he recalled the picture that he was shown of Mark Sloan. And then Steve also remembered a swift kick to the head before he lost consciousness. As he looked back he couldn’t recall anything else about the beating but this time he saw the face of the one who gave him the final kick. It was Mark Sloan.
Steve and Dr. Lewis arrived at the police station. Mark was brought out of his holding cell. He gasped when he saw Steve’s face. There were bruises on his face and a deep wound on his head as if he had been kicked with a boot. Steve was asked to make a positive ID. Steve looked at Mark and said “Yes, he’s the one. I remember he’s the one that beat me up. ..Dr. Lewis please I’m afraid of Mark Sloan can we get out of here?” “Immediately Mr. Wilson.” Mark couldn’t believe it. Before Steve could leave he called out “Steve I…” One of the officers interrupted him. Mark Sloan you are under arrest for the attempted murder of Steve Wilson. You have the right to remain silent…”
Mark uses his one phone call to call Jesse. “Jess I need your help. I’ve just been arrested for the attempted murder of Steve.” “That’s crazy Mark didn’t Steve tell them they’re mistaken?” “Jess..Steve has amnesia….he also believes that I hurt….him.” “Oh no Mark! How come?” “I don’t know why Jess but I think Steve is being influenced by Dr. Lewis. I want you to find out everything you can about him and then come out here. “Mark that could take a couple of days.” “Jess I’m not going anywhere.” “Ok Mark I’ll see what I can do. …Oh Mark you’ve probably been too busy to realize that the deadline has come and Chief Masters and Captain Newman had to give the evidence over to IA. They’ve started an investigation against Steve. “I know Jess I was afraid of this. Get Amanda to go over the evidence.”
Jesse went to talk to Amanda. She was as surprised as he was. She was very worried about Mark in jail and Steve under the influence of someone who clearly had nefarious intentions.
Amanda wasted no time and talked to Chief Masters and Captain Newman about what evidence was found at the Beach House and Steve’s locker. They had a break. Chief Masters and Captain Newman had taken over the investigation. They didn’t know who could be trusted. They hadn’t come up with any clues in Steve’s locker just prints on the outside which could belong to a dozen or so cops. But they did get lucky at the Beach House one strand of hair that belonged to a man. Still this wasn’t enough to obtain warrants to check every male cop at the precinct.
Jesse and Amanda checked out Dr. Lewis to see if they could find a connection between him and any police officer at Steve’s precinct and/or the Hawaii Police Department. They found out that Dr. Lewis was related to one of the officers in Steve’s precinct, and his partner, his best friend was related by marriage to two officers who worked in Hawaii. Then they cross-checked those officers with Steve to see if their paths had crossed at any time. One of the officers involved was in the same Army unit with Steve for a few weeks.
“This doesn’t make sense Amanda,” Jesse said as they went over what they had found.
“What do you mean it doesn’t make sense Jesse?”
“I mean wouldn’t Steve know if someone from his Army unit was also in his precinct?”
“Not necessarily Jesse I’m sure there’s lots of people that Steve served with in the Army that Steve only knew for a short time. It’s not unreasonable that he wouldn’t remember everyone of them.”
“I guess not. Well now we do have enough evidence to test those two officers with the strand of hair that Chief Masters and Captain Newman found.”
“Jesse they could say that the strand of hair could have been put there doing a recent visit.”
“What if Mark was to tell them that those officers never came to the beach house.”
“How can Mark tell them, he’s in jail.”
“Yes, but they don’t know that Mark didn’t tell us.”
“You mean we lie to Chief Masters and Captain Newman?”
“Well it wouldn’t be the first time we stretched the truth a little.”
Chief Masters and Captain Newman knew that Mark hadn’t been able to tell them about the strand of hair not being placed there while the officers were visiting Steve. But they decided not to say anything. When the strand of hair was a match that was enough to start an investigation of the officers. After gaining more evidence they were able to obtain arrest warrants for the two police officers. They also gave the information they found to the Chief of Police in Hawaii. Arrest warrants for the two Hawaii police officers and also Dr. Lewis were issued.
It seemed to be true there was no honor among thieves. Or among their family and friends either. Each trying for the best deal when it was clear that all hopes of framing Steve for their crimes had been lost because of a ‘strand of hair’.
While this was going on Jesse was able to make arrangements and go to Hawaii. The first thing he did was to get a rental car and ask for directions to the police station.
Mark was able to talk to Jesse for a few minutes. “Jess thank goodness you’re here any progress?”
“Yes Mark a lot. Steve is no longer under investigation. But there are two officers in Steve’s precinct and two police officers in Hawaii and Dr. Lewis who are in a lot of trouble. The last I heard is that there are arrest warrants out on all of them.”
“Jesse Steve is going to need someone to look after him when they come for Dr. Lewis.”
“I know that Mark but will Steve let me help him?”
“He won’t.. if you say you know me. But if you pretend to be taking over for Dr. Lewis Steve might not think too much about it.”
“Ok Mark but how are we going to get you out of here?”
“I don’t know Jesse I’m hoping with your help Steve will start to remember.”
“Well I hope it’s soon. Hawaii’s too beautiful of a place to spend cooped up in jail.”
“Jesse tell me about it” Mark quipped.
The two officers in Hawaii were arrested when they came into work. Dr. Lewis was arrested at his home. Steve didn’t know what to think when police officers swarmed the place and took Dr. Lewis away. Steve was worried about being all alone with no memory except for the memory of being kicked by Mark Sloan.
While Steve wondered what he was going to do now that his only friend he had was going to jail no doubt because of something Mark Sloan had done Jesse came in.
“Hello I’m Dr. Jesse Travis and I’m taking over for Dr. Lewis.”
Steve looked Jesse over. “Well I’m sure Dr. Lewis appreciates you helping him but could you tell me what’s going on?”
“I’m sorry I was only told that Dr. Lewis had a patient in his home who needed cared for while Dr. Lewis was away.”
“You mean he’ll be back soon?” Steve sounded excited.
“I don’t know that Mr. Wilson.. May I call you Steve. I have a feeling we are going to be good friends.”
Steve thought about it. Dr. Travis certainly was pushy wanting to get friendly with him after only meeting for the first time a few minutes ago. He looked at Jesse again and said. “Well I guess I have nothing to worry about anyway. By the look of things if there was a fight between you and a fly I’d choose a fly to win.” Jesse was just about to say something but he decided not to. He was glad that some of the old Steve was coming out.
“Look I’m going to check you back into the hospital. One of the officers here was kind enough to give me directions.”
“Dr. Lewis took me out of the hospital so Mark Sloan couldn’t hurt me again.”
“Well Steve where is Mark Sloan now?”
“He’s in jail.”
“Then I guess you have nothing to worry about do you Steve?”
“I guess not.”
Jesse took Steve back to the hospital. While Steve was getting admitted he asked to see the doctor in charge. He showed his credentials and proof that he was Steve Sloan’s doctor. And that Steve Wilson was indeed really Steve Sloan.
“Dr. Travis I understand your friend has amnesia but why would he accuse his own father of causing it?”
“Dr. Jacobsen I believe that Steve has started to remember pieces of his past but that everything is jumbled. He must have been shown a picture of Mark and then told by Dr. Lewis that Mark Sloan beat him up. The photograph and the name and perhaps a recollection in Steve’s past of his father has been super-imposed onto one of his attackers and now Steve believes that Mark Sloan did it.”
“Why don’t you just tell Mr. Steve Wilson.. Mr. Steve Sloan the truth?”
“Because he needs to trust me some more. If I tell him that I’m a friend of Mark’s then he’s not going to let me get anywhere near him. Mark loves his son and is hoping that Steve will start to recall what really happened.”
“What do you want us to do?”
“Let me stay here as Steve’s doctor and pretend to be taking over for Dr. Lewis while he’s away.”
“That’s no trouble we are short one doctor since Dr. Lewis was arrested. When can you start?”
“I’d like to make sure Steve is settled in his hospital room and then talk to Mark. He must be going out of his mind with worry, and I haven’t even checked into a hotel room yet.”
“Ok shall we say tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.?”
“Thanks Dr. Jacobsen.”
Jesse goes and checks on Steve. “Hello Steve how are you feeling?”
“I’m having headaches. Dr. Lewis told me they were nothing to worry about.”
Jesse didn’t like that. He knew that Steve should have been given something for the pain that he was in. He disliked the doctor even more when he realized that Dr. Lewis was intentionally making Steve suffer when some painkillers could have been given to control the headaches.
“Let me get you some painkillers to relieve the pain. I don’t know what Dr. Lewis was thinking but you need to rest. (Jesse new exactly what Dr. Lewis was thinking.) It’s important to get lots of rest. We want you to get your memory back. I’ve scheduled an MRI for tomorrow afternoon. I don’t think Dr. Lewis had time to do it.”
“What?”
“Steve don’t worry everything will be fine. I’m getting the painkillers now they’ll help you sleep.”
Jesse gets the painkillers makes sure Steve takes them and then waits until he’s sure that Steve is asleep.
Jesse then visits the police station and asks to talk to Mark Sloan.
“Jesse how’s Steve?” were the first words out of Mark’s mouth when Jesse and Mark were able to visit separated from each other by glass. Mark knew there was a lot more than just glass that separated him from his son he loved very much.
“He was complaining of a headache before I left so I gave him some medication and I also scheduled an MRI for tomorrow afternoon.”
“If Steve is still having headaches that’s not going to help him get his memory back.”
“I know I’m sure Dr. Lewis was counting on that very thing.”
“Did the medication help?”
“Yes Mark I stayed until I was sure Steve was asleep. Mark is there any idea when you will be released?”
“Not yet Jesse keep in mind they have a witness to the beating..Steve.”
“Which Steve doesn’t realize is a false memory.”
“Yes Steve’s memory of being beaten by…me is as real to him as you and I talking together between this glass.”
“What can we do?”
“Jesse first we need that MRI then we can know where to go from there.”
“Ok Mark I’ll let you know the results when I can.” Jesse started to yawn.
“Jesse I’m sure you haven’t had time to rest since you’ve flown out here.”
“Mark I haven’t had time to check into a hotel yet.” Jesse said over more yawns.
“Jesse why don’t you try the hotel where Steve was going to be staying in.” Mark gives him the directions.
Jesse was about to go and then thought of something. “Mark you told me that Steve never made it to his hotel.”
“Yes Jesse I did.”
“But you did ask for Steve at the front desk.”
“Yes Jesse. Jess what are you getting at?”
“Mark if we can get them to tell Steve that you were looking for him way after he was hit it may help Steve with his false memory if we provide proof to him that it couldn’t have happened the way he thinks it did.”
“Jesse that’s a great idea!” Mark said with delight.
Jesse and Mark said their goodbyes and Jesse left for the hotel using the directions that Mark gave him. At the front desk Jesse says “Hello I’m Jesse Travis I’m looking for a room for a couple of days..I was told that a friend of mine Steve Wilson was checked in here.”
“Boy whoever this Steve Wilson guy is he sure is popular. “What do you mean?” “You are the second person to ask for this guy and he never even bothered to check in.”
“Please this is important could you describe this other man who asked for my friend?”
“Sure he said he was a friend also he was around sixtyish tall with gray hair and a mustache.”
Jesse smiled. “Now can you tell me what time he came in?”
“Sure it was around 3 p.m. I remember because I was getting ready to go on break like I do everyday at that time.”
Jesse smiled according to the hospital records when Steve was brought in it was 1 p.m. Which was several hours before Mark had asked for him.
“I need you to tell this to my friend Steve..Wilson it’s important that he hears this.”
“I don’t understand.”
“You don’t have to. Please it’s important.”
“Ok where is your friend?”
“He’s in the hospital suffering from amnesia.”
“That’s too bad a beautiful place like Hawaii and he’s stuck in the hospital.”
“Yes, but my other friend is stuck in jail. That’s also not a pleasant place to be either.”
“You have a point there. I’ll be glad to help. What time do you want me there?”
“Could you come around 5 p.m. I’ve scheduled an MRI for my friend and the procedure takes several hours.”
“We are really busy at that time but I could come after I get off work.”
“That will be just fine thanks.”
“You’re welcome Mr. Travis we like to know that our guests are having a wonderful time.”
Jesse was about to go upstairs to his hotel room. “Oh Mr. Travis?” “Yes?” “Wouldn’t you like to get checked in and get a room?” “Oops! That’s right thanks.” Jesse signs in and then goes up to his hotel room. As soon as Jesse lays his head on his pillow he’s fast asleep.
The next morning Jesse checks in with Dr. Jacobsen and helps take care of Dr. Lewis’ patients until it’s time for Steve’s MRI.
Jesse comes into Steve’s room. Steve is awake worrying about the procedure. “Mr. Wilson what are you worried about?”
“Dr. Travis how can you tell I’m nervous?”
“I just know Mr. Wilson. There’s nothing to be worried about. We are going to put you inside this giant cube and then I need you to be very still while we look inside your head.”
“How?”
“Well first you are going to be lying on your back on a special table and then we are going to slide you in until your head is in the center of the cube. Then with radio waves the MRI scanner will pick out a very small point inside your head. The point might be a cube that is half a millimeter on each side. The MRI will go through your head point by point, building up a 2-D or 3-D map of tissue types. It then integrates all of this information together to create 2-D images or 3-D models. Mr. Wilson an MRI will provide an unparalleled view inside your head. Then we will be able to see if there is any tissue damage that is the cause of your amnesia or whether you will recover given time.”
“Will you be there the whole time?”
“Mr. Wilson I will be with you through out all of this. Believe me I want you to get your memory back.”
Jesse does the MRI on Steve and after waiting for the results a nurse finally sends them to Jesse. Jesse looks them over. “Great!” he says.
Jesse goes into see Steve and tell him the good news. “Mr. Wilson the MRI showed no tissue damage from the beating you sustained.”
“So I should get my memory back?”
“Yes given time you should.”
“What do you mean by that Dr. Travis?”
“I mean I can’t tell you if your memory will come back in an hour, tomorrow, or in a month or two months.”
“But it will come back?”
“Yes Mr. Wilson I’m sure it will return. I just can’t say when.”
“What do I do in the meantime Doctor Travis?”
“First Mr. Wilson I’m going to give you a sedative to help you sleep. You’ve had a long day and need to relax. Second there’s a man whose coming over to talk to you. Please listen to what he has to say.”
“What about?”
“I told you Mr. Wilson there’s nothing to worry about. I simply told you so you wouldn’t be surprised when he came.” Jesse gave Steve a sedative and watched as Steve drifted off to sleep.
While he was waiting for the hotel clerk to get off work and come to the hospital Jesse helped Dr. Jacobsen. It was the least he could do to show his thanks for allowing him to work at the hospital attending to Steve’s needs.
Finally the hotel clerk was able to come. Mr. Wilson this is Mr. Hayes he works at the hotel where you were to be staying.”
“How do you know where I was going to be staying?”
“Mr. Wilson that doesn’t matter right now just listen to what Mr. Hayes has to say.. Please.”
“Ok Mr. Hayes what did you want to tell me?” A Mark Sloan was asking for you Mr. Wilson at about 3 p.m.
“Which is hours after you were admitted to the hospital” Jesse finished for Mr. Hayes.
“If Mark Sloan did hurt me…then why would he be asking for me hours afterward it doesn’t make sense.”
“That’s right Steve it doesn’t make sense. Mr. Hayes thank you so much.”
“You’re welcome Mr. ..or should I say Dr. Travis.”
“Jesse’s fine.”
“Ok Steve now I have something else for you to think about. Why would Dr. Lewis not give you any painkillers?”
“Because…he really wasn’t interested in my welfare was he?”
“No Steve he wasn’t. Now can you tell me what you’ve learned.”
“That Mark Sloan couldn’t have been the one to attack me. But why would Dr. Lewis say he did?”
“He wanted to hurt him somehow. Or stop him from seeing someone he loves very much. Someone he would do anything to protect. Mr. Wilson.”
Steve thought for a minute. “My name isn’t really Mr. Wilson is it?”
“No Steve it isn’t but it was important that you figured it out for yourself. Now can you put the clues together?”
“Mark Sloan couldn’t have beaten me… there’s someone he loves very much……Jesse!”
“Yes?” Jesse asked hoping that Steve’s memory had returned.
“Jesse I remember everything.. Jesse my father’s in jail!”
Jesse smiled. Glad to know Steve was concerned about Mark. “Steve don’t worry. I’ll get you checked out of here and then the two of us will go to the jail and help Mark get released.”
Jesse signed Steve’s release papers and had Steve ride in a wheelchair out of the hospital. “I hate these things!”
“Yep you’re back to normal. Really Steve just because this isn’t Community General doesn’t mean they wouldn’t have the same rules.”
Steve and Jesse went to see the Police Captain in Hawaii Captain Danny McGarrett. “Captain McGarrett I’m Lieutenant Steve Sloan. You need to release my dad Mark Sloan immediately. He’s not guilty. He’s not the one who hurt me.”
“You signed a statement saying he did.”
“I know.. But now I know that what I believed to be the truth was nothing more than a false memory deliberately planted by Dr. Lewis to keep my dad from finding me.”
“But why?”
“To keep my dad from telling me that I was being framed that I had to come back home as quickly as possible to prove my innocence.”
“Ok there is some paperwork that needs signed and then I’ll release your dad. But Lt. Sloan you better not change your version of what happened again.”
“I won’t Sir.”
While they are waiting for Mark to be released Steve calls Amanda and Jesse calls Captain Newman.
“Hello.”
“Amanda hi!”
“Steve it’s great to hear your voice.”
“Amanda it’s great to hear your voice too believe me!”
“Steve I know you’re not back yet but welcome home!”
“Amanda I look forward to when you can say that to my face.”
“I do too Steve take care give Mark and Jesse my best.”
“I will goodbye Amanda.”
-----
Jesse wanted to know how the case was going. “Captain Newman can you tell me what’s been happening.”
“Dr. Travis I’m not going to discuss an ongoing investigation with a civilian.”
“Well, Captain Newman” Jesse said becoming bold “you wouldn’t have an ongoing investigation if it wasn’t for Amanda’s and mine help.”
Captain Newman shrugged. “You have a point Dr. Travis. As you know they are all incriminating each other. One of them has even decided to testify about Steve’s attack. Apparently one of the two flunkies they hired to beat up Steve almost got carried away and tried to drug Steve but was stopped.”
“I’m glad Captain but why?”
“Steve saved one of the officers involved life in the Army years ago and he thought he owed it to the Lieutenant.”
“So it’s ok to almost kill my friend, beat, and frame him for a crime that they committed but not turn him into a junkie?”
“Dr. Travis don’t try to make sense of why some people will do things like that. Trust me it will keep you up at nights wondering.
“You’re right Captain thanks for the information.”
-----
Mark comes into the room where Steve and Jesse are waiting. Mark and Steve look at each other for the briefest moment and then they both rush to each other and embrace.
“Dad I feel so guilty accusing my own dad of something so horrible as attempting to kill me.”
“Steve this isn’t your fault. I know you want to blame yourself but son please don’t. I don’t blame you. Nobody does. You clearly believed that what you remembered was real. You had no idea that Dr. Lewis helped plant that false memory.”
“But Dad I need to make it up to you somehow.”
“Steve just keep being the wonderful son you’ve always been that’s all I need.”
“Ok Dad.”
Jesse finally cuts in “now that that’s all settled we have a couple of days before we have to go back home. Why don’t we behave like real tourists and see what paradise has to offer?”
“Jess that sounds great.” Said Mark.
“I’d like that too” said Steve “but with my luck in paradise I’ll probably be attacked by a shark.”
The End
Author’s Note: Obviously Captain Danny McGarrett is from Hawaii 5-O. I took the first and last name of two of the characters for this story since it was based in Hawaii.
