Barry Van Dyke was born in Atlanta, GA on July 31st, 1951 as Barry Wayne Van Dyke. He's the second son to Marjorie and Richard Wayne,? AKA - Dick Van Dyke. Barry has one older brother, Christian and two younger sisters, Stacey and Carrie-Beth.
Growing up in New York and Los Angeles, Barry got interested in acting as he hung around on the set of the Dick Van Dyke show. Being a chip off the old block (no disrespect intended!) he made his first appearance as the young violinist Florian on The Dick Van Dyke show. As a teen he joined his father’s crew and worked as a ‘cue card boy’ and ‘production assistant’. ?

Barry majored in “Theater Arts” at “Pierce Junior College” in Los Angeles. According to some sources he met his wife-to-be, Mary-Beth Carey at a local theater at age 16 (but that story has not been verified.) Barry and Mary got married in 1974.

Carey Wayne, their first son, was born (February 25^th, 1976) and soon Shane Thomas (August 28^th,), Wesley Richard (October 22^nd,) and Taryn Elizabeth (June 1^st, 1986) joined the family.

All of Barry’s kids have the same flair for acting and creatively appeared with dad and granddad on Diagnosis Murder, both as actors and writers… Talent does clearly run in their genes! Recently we got a glance of some of the marvelous paintings that Wes produces. From the artwork that we got to see, “Majestic River” he seems to be a very talented artist and we expect to hear from him.

On July 26^th 2001 Barry’s first grandchild Ava was born. She’s the first daughter of Carey and Anne Van Dyke and? …? her baby sister Gracie arrived on December 8^th 2003! Both Ava and Gracie are being pampered by their big brother, Alex (February 13^th, 1994) and older sister Mia (May 23^rd, 1996) who fell in love with daddy Carey before mom Anne ever did...


After Diagnosis Murder got canceled lots of people wondered what happened to Barry, but we can assure you that he’s alive and kicking and working on several projects. Dick Van Dyke will be taping the ‘reunion’ episode of the Dick Van Dyke show starting March 16^th 2004 and our sources tell us that:

“Barry and Dick are talking about a movie and Barry also writes screenplays. Shane is still pursuing his acting career with full force and is awaiting release of his movie "Arizona Summer" Carey's been busy writing and is now producing so maybe he'll be able to pull some family project together.”

January 3rd, 2006. Diagnosis Murder finds it spot on the Hallmark Channel and is airing on a daily basis.

January 7th, 2006. Dick, Barry and Wes star in 'Murder 101' hopefully the start to a new series of mysteries...
