Beach House Morning

?

“Good morning Dad. What are your plans for your day off?”

?

“Steve I don’t have the whole day off Norman managed to schedule a budget meeting.”

?

“But if I know you Dad you’ll think of a way out of it.”

?

Mark laughs “You’re right Steve. I’m planning on ‘accidentally’ leaving my cell phone in the car and then being so busy that I forget what time it is.”

?

“Well Dad enjoy your day off. I just hope Norman doesn’t give you too much trouble.”

?

“Don’t worry about Norman Steve. I can handle him.”

?

“I’m sure you can. Bye Dad.”

?

“Bye Steve.”

?

Steve goes to work while Mark gets ready to spend his day off golfing with an old friend of his.

?

-----

?

When Steve is about a block from the police station he is at a traffic light as he goes through having a green light a drunk driver runs through the red light for him hitting Steve’s car. Steve’s car spins around several times and Steve hits his head on the driver’s side window.

?

Police, firemen, and other rescue workers are called. They manage to pull Steve out of the car after making sure he did not have any back injuries or any other noticeable injuries except for the head wound. The drunk driver was taken to the morgue.

?

The ambulance carrying Steve raced to Community General.

?

-----

?

Mark picked up his old friend and was on his way to the golf course while Steve was on his way to Community General.

?

-----

?

Steve arrives at Community General and Jesse rushes to meet his patient. “Oh no Steve!”

?

While Jesse is busy rushing Steve with the EMTs to Trauma Room 1 for examination he sees Norman. “Norman call Mark quick!”

?

“What about Amanda?”

?

“She’s sick. Do it Norman fast!”

?

Jesse examined Steve while Norman called Mark. There was no answer on his cell phone.

?

-----

?

Mark had heard his cell phone go off. He looked at the number and noticed it was from Norman. “Aren’t you going to get it?” his friend asked.

?

“No way, it’s from the hospital administrator. No doubt reminding me of an important budget meeting that just had to be scheduled on the first day off I’ve had for a long time. Come on lets go enjoy our golf game.”

?

“Ok Mark.”

?

-----

?

Jesse examined Steve. All he could find was the head injury. He treated Steve’s head wound and then ordered the nurses to admit Steve for observation.

?

Jesse went to look for Norman. “Norman did you call Mark?” “I tried Dr. Travis but there was no answer.”

?

“That’s ok I’ll call him.”

?

Jesse was just about to call when he heard his name being called “Dr. Travis to the ER, Dr. Travis to the ER While Jesse rushed to take care of another emergency he told Norman to try Mark’s cell phone again.

?

It rang and rang. Mark having ‘accidentally’ leaving it in the car while he golfed.

?

-----

?

After Jesse was done with his emergency he went to Steve’s room to see how his best friend was doing. He opened the door quietly and waited for Steve to wake up. After about ten minutes Jesse noticed a slight jerking of Steve’s hand.

?

Jesse smiled. “Hi I see you landed back here. And so early in the morning too. Tell me Steve did you even get to work today?”

?

Steve looked at Jesse with a puzzled look. “Dr. Travis who’s Steve?”

?

“What did you call me?”

?

“Dr. Travis.. I see your name on your nametag.”

?

“Oh right.” .. Jesse paused slightly. “I need to ask you some questions can you do that?”

?

“I think so.”

?

“What’s your name?

?

Steve thought a minute. “You did say ‘Steve’ awhile ago didn’t you.? I don’t see anyone else in the room.”

?

“Ok you’re right I did. What’s your last name Steve?”

?

…. “I don’t know.” Steve finally said.

?

Jesse was worried but he knew he had to keep Steve calm. It’s all right Steve you’ve had a head injury it’s not uncommon for you to be having memory loss. “I need to know a few more things so I know where to go from here.”

?

“Ok” Steve said drowsily.

?

“Two plus two equals what?”

?

“Four.”

?

“Very good Steve.”

?

“Now who’s the president of the United States?”

?

“President Joseph Hunter”

?

Jesse smiled so far Steve knew all the answers. He also noticed Steve yawning more frequently and decided he could only ask a few more questions then he would have to let Steve get some more sleep. Rest was the best thing for Steve.

?

“Ok Steve just two more quick questions and I’ll let you get some sleep. “What’s the name of the high school you graduated from?”

?

“I…Don’t..know.”

?

“That’s all right Steve.” Jesse could tell Steve was worried. Jesse was worried too. He was already sure that he knew what type of memory loss Steve had but he would need one more question answered to confirm his suspicion.

?

“Name the secret ingredients in Bob’s BBQ sauce.”

“Who’s Bob?”

?

Jesse knew then. Steve was suffering from Dissociative Amnesia. Steve couldn’t remember any personal information about himself.

?

“Bob’s is a BBQ restaurant Steve. I’m going to go and let you get some rest. I’ll come by later. Ok?”

?

“Ok Dr. Travis.”

?

“Steve you can call me Jesse all right?”

?

“All..ri..ght” Steve said as he drifted off to sleep.

?

Jesse went over to the nurse’s station. “I’m going to grab a quick bite to eat and then sleep for a couple of hours. If Dr. Sloan comes before I get back have me paged. I want to see him before he goes to visit his son.”

?

“Yes Dr. Travis.” One of the nurses said.

?

-----

?

“Fred that was a great game” Mark congratulated his friend on winning.

?

“Thanks Mark. Sorry I beat you.”

?

“No problem. I’ll get you next time. How about I buy you an early dinner as my treat?”

?

“That would be great Mark thanks.”

?

-----

?

Norman tries to call Mark again but still there is no answer. He looks at his watch. It’s time for the budget meeting. Once again Mark has managed to escape.

?

Mark and Fred are enjoying their dinner when Mark sees another friend of his. “Frank it’s good to see you!” “Same here Mark. Hi Fred!” “Frank would you like to join us?” “I don’t want to intrude I’m just here for a quick bite to eat and then I’m seeing my granddaughter at her school play. My daughter-in-law invited me to their home for dinner but she’s on a vegetarian diet.” “That’s good for you Frank.” “And that’s coming from a guy who’s part owner of a BBQ restaurant” kidded Fred. “I’ll tell you what” said Mark let’s finish up and then we can all see your granddaughter perform.

?

Mark and his friends Fred and Frank watched Franks’ granddaughter perform in her school play ‘Bye Bye Birdie’. Mark remarked that that play had always been his favorite. After the school play Mark and his friends parted. Mark looked at his watch. The budget meeting must have ended hours ago. He decided to go to Community General let Norman get angry with him and then he would have the rest of the day to enjoy with his son Steve.

?

At Community General Mark went to search for Norman. He finally found him roaming the halls. “Norman I’m so sorry I forgot the budget meeting. A funny thing happened I forgot to look at my cell phone.” Norman only grunted and walked away.

?

Mark thought “Norman is madder then I thought he’d be. Well he’ll get over it soon. Until then I better stay out of his way.”

?

Mark noticed a nurse at the nurse’s station. It was not the same nurse that Jesse had talked to hours ago. “Hello Nurse Tanner is Dr. Travis or Dr. Bentley available?” “Dr. Bentley called in sick and Dr. Travis is taking a nap in one of the on call rooms I was told. Should I have him paged?” “No that’s ok I’m going to check on a few of my patients and then go home.”

?

Mark made sure all of his patients were doing fine and then left for the beach house. He knew that Steve would be home by now. He also knew that Steve would be hungry.

?

?Mark pulled into the driveway. Mark is dismayed when he doesn’t see Steve’s car in the driveway. Mark goes into the beach house and checks the answering machine. There aren’t any messages. Then Mark calls the station to find out when Steve will be coming home. He tried to not sound like an overprotective father but he wasn’t fooling anyone. “Dr. Sloan I was told that the hospital was informing you “Lt. Sloan was injured in a traffic accident this morning.” “Captain Newman…Why wasn’t I notified?” “I told you Dr. Sloan..Mark we were under the impression that the hospital had notified you and we were busy getting witnesses to corroborate that the driver of the car smashed into the Lieutenant. The other driver died at the scene. Mark then knew that Norman must have been calling all those times to tell him about his son. “Thanks… yes someone did try to notify me but I just didn’t listen.”

?

Mark headed back to Community General as fast as he could. Jesse was just waking up and decided to check on a few of his patients before checking on his favorite patient/best friend as Mark pulled into his parking place. Mark heads for admittance I want the room number for Steve Sloan. The nurse checks the computer. Mr. Sloan is in room 305. Mark goes to the elevator to the third floor. Nurse Young whom Jesse spoke to hours earlier is back at the nurse’s station and sees Dr. Sloan. “Excuse me Dr. Sloan are you going into see your son?” “Yes nurse I am.” “Dr. Travis asked to talk to you before you went in.” “I’ll talk to Dr. Travis in a little while right now I just want to see my son Nurse Young.”

?

Mark quietly opened Steve’s room and saw Steve sleeping peacefully. He shut the door as gently as he could but Steve was startled and woke up. Mark went over to Steve’s bedside. “I’m sorry Steve didn’t mean to wake you up.” Steve stared at his father for a few minutes. Mark was getting worried Steve had a blank expression on his face. “Steve?” Mark asked. “Who are you?” questioned Steve. Mark felt himself start to faint as Steve’s question sank in. His son whom he loved more than anyone didn’t know who he was.

?

As Mark started to fall Jesse who had just come to see Steve came into the room in time to catch Mark before he hit the ground. Jesse knew he wasn’t strong enough to help Mark up so he called for help. As this was going on Jesse assured Steve that he would be right back. With help from the orderlies they put Mark in another room so Jesse could examine him.

?

Mark came to shortly. “Mark I’m so sorry I didn’t want you to find out this way.” “Jesse it’s not your fault you tried to warn me. Jesse what… exactly is wrong with Steve?”

?

“I believe Steve has Dissociative Amnesia.”

?

Mark felt his world was coming apart his son had no memory of him or the love the two of them shared. “Do…you….think..it’s permanent?” Mark tried to get the sentence out.

?

“I don’t think so Mark. I don’t know how long it’s going to last but I don’t think it’s going to be permanent. Mark are you going to be ok because I really need to check on Steve.”

?

“…I’ll be fine Jesse just give me a few minutes.”

?

“Ok Mark but I really think I should admit you.”

?

“Jesse who’s the senior doctor? Don’t worry I’ll lie here until I’m sure I’m better. Now go help Steve he’s all alone.”

?

“Ok Mark if you’re sure.”

?

“I am Jess and thanks.”

?

“You’re welcome Mark.”

?

Jesse comes into Steve’s room. “Hello Steve sorry you were surprised like that.”

?

“Jesse who was that man.. Is he another friend of mine that I don’t remember?”

?

“Yes..Steve he’s a friend of yours and more.”

?

“Who is he?”

?

Just then Mark came back into the room. “I’m your.. father Steve.”

?

“What’s wrong with me? I can’t even remember my own father!”

?

“Steve take it easy,” said Mark trying to be calm himself. “Jesse and I were talking and we believe that you have Dissociative Amnesia. Now in the majority of these cases the memory comes back in time.”

?

“You said ‘the majority of these cases’ what if I’m one of the rare instances where my memory never returns? What am I supposed to do if my family and friends remain strangers to me? What about all my missing memories?” Steve kept going on.

?

“Hold on son.”

?

“Yes Steve it’s way too early to worry about the what ifs.”

?

“…just tell me what happens then.”

?

“Steve if the worse case happens and you never get your memory back we’ll make new memories together.” Mark assured his son.

?

“Steve the best thing for you right now is rest. I’m going to give you a sedative so you can sleep.”

?

“Wait where do I go after I leave the hospital. I don’t even know where home is.”

?

“Home is with me son.” Said Mark.

?

Mark and Jesse stayed until the sedative took effect and then shut the door softly. They walked together down the hall a ways and then talked for a few minutes. “Mark you really should go home with the sedative I gave Steve he’s going to be out for several hours. There’s really nothing you can do.” “I know Jess but there’s something I have to do first and then I’ll rest in the on call room. Home is just not home without Steve.”

?

Mark goes into Norman Briggs’ room. Norman is sitting at his desk trying to act busy. “Norman I came to apologize I know that you were calling me to tell me about Steve. I’m sorry I brushed you off.” Norman tried not to let the tears come. “Dr…Mark just tell me your son is going to be all right?” “We don’t know yet Norman.” Mark sighed.

?

While Mark went to sleep in the on call room Jesse called Amanda. “Hello.” Amanda said weakly. “Amanda I’m sorry to disturb you when you’re not feeling well. Steve’s been hurt.” “Oh no not again. How is he?” “He was in a car accident. …Amanda.. Steve has amnesia.” “Oh no! How is Mark taking the news.” “As can be expected he’s very worried.” “I wish I could be there right now with Mark and Steve.” “I know you do Amanda but you need to stay home so nobody else will get the flu. I’ll keep in touch Amanda.” “You better Jesse.” Amanda said before they said their goodbyes and hung up.

?

A couple of days had went by and Steve was ready to be released although he still didn’t recognize his father. He did know that Mark was very kind and he must love him very much. Steve just wished he could remember that love. Because of that love that Steve saw he was willing to call Mark ‘Dad’ but there was no emotion to the word, he had called him ‘Mark’ at first and had seen the sad look on Mark’s face.

?

Mark comes into Steve’s room with a wheelchair. “Steve I filled out all the paperwork let me help you into the wheelchair and then I’ll take you home.”

?

Steve looked at the wheelchair. “Well rules are rules I am anxious to see my home.”

?

Mark tried not to show his disappointment. He was hoping that Steve would comment on how much he hated being in wheelchairs. After several days there was still no progress. Mark had even brought photo albums for Steve to look at but none of the pictures were familiar. Deep down Mark was afraid that Steve could be one of the rare cases where the memory doesn’t return.

?

Mark drove Steve home hoping that the scenery would bring back memories of Steve’s personal life. But nothing happened. Not even the beach house or the Pacific Ocean that Steve liked to surf aroused any memories. Steve stood outside the beach house. “This is where you live..Dad?” “No Steve this is where ‘we’ live.”

?

Mark brought Steve into the beach house and gave him the guided tour. Steve was impressed at everything there was. He was also starting to feel depressed at not recognizing his own home. “Steve this is your unit. Why don’t you take a little nap and I’ll get dinner ready. I’ll also see if Jesse and Amanda can come visit. Amanda should be feeling better soon.” “Who’s Amanda is she my girlfriend?” “..No Steve Amanda is a friend of ours just like Jesse.”

?

While Steve was napping Mark made dinner and invited Jesse and Amanda over CJ having been with his father for a few days. Just like Mark had hoped Amanda was feeling better. Mark was hoping that a dinner with Jesse and Amanda just like all the times before would be relaxing to Steve and help with his recovery. Amanda arrived “Mark it’s good to see you again.” “Amanda it’s good to see you too” as they gave each other hugs of friendship. “How is he Mark?” “Still no improvement I’m afraid.”

?

Just then Jesse came in. “Hello Mark where’s Steve?” “I told him to get some rest. That was a couple of hours ago. He must have been very tired.”

?

“Well it gives us some time to talk before Steve wakes up.”

?

“What about Jesse?”

?

“Mark there still hasn’t been any improvement yet has there?”

?

“No Jesse there hasn’t and to tell you the truth I’m frightened.”

?

“I’m frightened too” said Steve having surprising them as he continued up the stairs to greet them. “You must be Amanda” Steve held out his hand. Amanda shook his hand. She felt awkward this wasn’t the way they usually greeted each other. Jesse what did you want to talk about?”

?

“Steve I’d like to try Pentothal on you. It’s a drug that is sometimes used for your type of amnesia.”

?

“Why didn’t you try it earlier?”

?

“Because Steve as with all medicines there could be side effects and I was hoping your memory would return on its own.”

?

“What side effects?”

?

“Steve some of the side effects include respiratory depression,? myocardial depression, and somnolence.. and there’s risk of becoming addicted.”

?

“What are the benefits?”

?

“Well the drug along with therapy have proven to help restore lost memories.”

?

“So if I take this drug it could help me get my memory back but I’ll be addicted to it?”

?

“That’s right Steve. It’s your choice of course.”

?

“Steve I don’t think you should take the risk.” Said Mark he had avoided suggesting it to Steve earlier because of the side effects.

?

“I have to do something! I’m tired of everyone I should know being strangers to me. I’m tired of not even remembering what high school I went to.”

?

Amanda said “Jesse could the drug be addictive if taken just once?”

?

“No..Amanda it shouldn’t. Steve, Mark should we try the drug just once?”

?

“Ok” they both agreed to try it once and see how it helped.

?

“I have another idea” suggested Mark. “Steve how about after you have the Pentothal we take a trip to memory lane so to speak and visit the places of your youth?”

?

“That sounds like a plan.”

?

After dinner it was arranged that Steve would go back into the hospital in two days if he still didn’t remember and be given the Pentothal. They wanted to be sure Steve was close to emergency attention if he should have a severe side effect from the drug. Mark and Jesse would stay with Steve throughout the therapy session.

?

While waiting for the agreed time that Steve would be admitted Amanda used a camcorder to record interviews of Steve’s old teachers and friends, she also went to Steve’s old high school and filmed the building, Steve’s precinct anywhere and anyone that Mark, Jesse, and Amanda could think of.

?

On the agreed day Mark and Jesse had Steve admitted and arranged for a VCR in Steve’s room for when Amanda was ready.

?

Then Jesse administered the drug and Mark and Jesse watched closely while the drug took effect. While they were waiting for Amanda Mark once again showed Steve pictures of his family. Steve didn’t recognize any of them still but he did not become upset either as he had done before.

?

Amanda came into the room and they hooked up the camcorder to the VCR and TV. Steve watched some of his old teachers, friends, Captain Newman, and other officers from Steve’s precinct. He also saw the exterior of his precinct, high school, BBQ Bob’s, and Steve’s favorite log at the beach.

?

Steve was getting drowsy so they stopped the film. Amanda left the room and Mark and Jesse kept monitoring Steve. Before Steve fell asleep Mark brought out the photo album. Mark pointed out a picture of Steve taken on a pony. He then went on to explain how each year when he was younger he would have his birthday at pony land. Shortly Mark and Jesse could hear Steve softly snoring.

?

“Now what Mark?”

?

“I don’t know Jesse but we can’t risk giving him anymore. At least he’s not experiencing one of the other side effects.”

?

“Just then they heard Steve in his sleep softly say “No thanks I’m a little sore.”

?

Jesse looked puzzled but Mark had a huge grin on his face. “I don’t get it Mark why are you so happy?”

?

“Jesse don’t you get it? A few years ago we had Steve’s birthday at pony land. That’s what he said when I asked him if he wanted to ride again.”

?

Jesse then understood. “So if he is dreaming of that it’s likely that his personal memory is returning.”

?

“Yes Jess I believe it is, thank goodness.”

?

Mark and Jesse watched Steve sleeping assured in the knowledge that when Steve woke up he would remember them.

?

Jesse looked at his watch “Mark I have to go I’m late for rounds. Tell Steve I said hello and I’ll see him when I can.”

?

“Ok Jesse I appreciate all you and Amanda have done.”

?

“Mark what are friends for. I’ll see you later.”

?

“Bye Jess.”

?

Jesse went down the hallway to start his rounds and ran into Norman. “Dr. Travis how is Lt. Sloan?”

?

“We think Steve is going to be just fine.”

?

“Oh that’s great. You’d think Mark would mind if I came to visit?

?

“Not at all Norman. I’ll talk to you later I have to do my rounds.”

?

Mark heard a knock on the door and got up quickly so Steve wouldn’t be disturbed. “Mark I came to apologize for not coming sooner.”

?

“Nonsense Norman it’s I who should apologize for not answering you. And to show you I mean it next time there’s a budget meeting I’ll be there no excuses.”

?

“Good because there’s one scheduled for tomorrow morning.”

?

Mark sighs. “I’ll be there.”

?

“Gotcha Mark.” Norman says as he leaves. Mark was glad things were back to normal between he and Norman and he hoped that Jesse and him were right and things would be back to normal between father and son.

?

A few hours later Steve woke up. “Dad I remember!”

?

“I know you do son” Mark smiled.

?

“How do you know?”

?

“In your dream you mentioned pony land.”

?

“Yes that was a lot of fun when I was growing up I’m glad I remembered. When I get better and have a day off I wouldn’t mind riding again.”

?

“Steve you do remember about pony land don’t you?”

?

“Sure it was turned into a Wellness Center but I wasn’t talking about riding ponies Dad.”

?

“Oh Ok.”

?

“Now when can I get out of here?”

?

Mark hugged Steve. “Dad why’d you hug me?”

?

“Because Steve I truly have my son back.”

?

The End.

Author’s Notes: While doing research for another story I found out about Dissociative Amnesia and an idea came into my head. Upon further research I discovered that this would only happen after a traumatic or stressful incident of a certain nature that I am uncomfortable with getting into. However, I didn’t want to let my idea go even when I discovered that this couldn’t happen because of a result of a head injury. It might not work the way I described but Steve not recognizing his own father has always been a favorite Steve hurt/comfort of mine.
