To Live A Dream by
“Dad don’t worry I can drive you into work today.” Steve said as he noticed his dad having trouble with his car.
“But Steve won’t it make you late for work?”
“No I have time to spare. For the first time in a long while I’m actually ready early. Come on Dad.”
Steve and Mark get into Steve’s truck and drive on PCH on their way to Community General. The traffic was light. Mark was glad because already he was going to be late for work.
“Steve I really appreciate you doing this for me.”
Steve smiled. It had been almost a year since Steve having been tired of Mark’s ignorance that Steve was upset that Mark had completely disregarded his feelings when he had not gone to the trouble of thanking him for saving the con’s life who was choking but had found the time to tell Jesse he was good at anagrams had decided he had had enough and decided to leave his father without telling him where he was going. After being hurt and seeing his dad when he woke up and finding out he had stayed by his bedside Steve decided to give his father another chance. Mark knew that he couldn’t make the same mistake so had found ways to let his son know how grateful he was. At first he had praised his son for every little thing such as taking a frozen pizza and putting it in the oven. Steve had to finally tell his dad he couldn’t handle the constant praising over every little thing he did. Mark had agreed to compromise he would commend his son for those things he did that deserved praise. He would merely thank his son for giving him his mail and small gestures like that.
Steve was silent for awhile as he thought of the events that had transpired. “Steve you’re being very quiet” Mark finally said unused to the quiet ride together.
“Sorry Dad I was just thinking about last year. Father’s Day is this Sunday is there anything you want?”
“No Steve just my son.. This year Father’s Day will definitely be better than last year.”
“Yea I spent the day getting hurt and you spent what was left of the day by my bedside when you had heard what happened and was able to get out to Florida.”
“I remember I didn’t arrive until after 11 p.m. I didn’t even have an hour to spend the day with my son… I love you Steve. You know that don’t you?”
“Yes Dad I know. I love you too. Don’t worry there isn’t anything bothering me this year. I’ve made arrangements to be able to have the weekend off. We can make this a Father’s Day you’ll never forget.”
As they were just starting to drive under the underpass a teenager was pointing a laser gun at drivers as they came near. Steve’s eyes were effected as the bright light hurt his eyes and automatically blinked his eyes. Several other drivers were also effected by the bright light and soon there was a 5 car pile-up. Steve and Mark were in the middle. Steve had tried hard to avoid the accident but he couldn’t. He did manage to make sure his dad was protected by swerving so the driver’s side would take most of the impact.
Police were soon at the scene, but they were too late to find the teenager. He had ran off as soon as he saw the accident.
It quickly became apparent that more police, rescue workers, and ambulances would be required at the scene.
Inside Steve’s truck both Steve and Mark were unconscious. The jaws of life were used to get Steve out of the truck. Mark’s side of the truck opened easily. Soon Steve and Mark were being cared for along with the other victims.
-----
At Community General Jesse waited impatiently for Mark to arrive. It was not like his mentor to be this late for work. Sure occasionally he was late but usually that was when there was a budget meeting scheduled. Today Jesse knew there wasn’t any meeting planned. So where was Mark?
Jesse tried Mark’s cell phone but after several attempts he gave up.
The announcement over the PA system about the 5 car pile-up over on PCH startled Jesse. Some how he just knew that his friend was right in the middle. Probably saw the accident and was giving aid at the scene too busy to call in. Jesse called for more help to make way for the new patients who would be coming in. He also called the local hospitals to see if some of them could take the overflow of patients.
Jesse was surprised when one of the first patients to arrive was his best friend Steve. He had thought that Steve would have been at work by now. Jesse rushed Steve into the trauma room to take care of his friend once more.
Hours later Jesse emerged from ICU he had had no choice but to put his best friend in a drug-induced coma. Steve’s brain had swelled and Jesse was afraid of brain damage that might occur so he had put his friend under to give Steve’s brain time to recover.
Jesse knew that Mark would be worried about Steve. He was surprised when Mark was not in the doctors’ lounge or in his office. Jesse was sure that Mark would have been aware that Steve had been brought in since he had no doubt that Mark had been at the scene helping out. Jesse started asking questions about where Mark could have been.
“Nurse have you seen Dr. Sloan?” Jesse asked the nurse at the nurse’s station.
“Dr. Sloan is one of the patients who were brought in from the 5 car pile-up. I thought you’d been notified Dr. Travis.”
“No it’s been hectic around here thanks nurse I’ll find out what room Dr. Sloan is in.”
“I can tell you Dr. Travis.”
“Please.”
“He’s in room 205.”
“Thanks nurse.”
Jesse went straight to room 205. Mark’s doctor was just coming out of the room. “Dr. Travis I’m sorry I didn’t notify you about Dr. Sloan’s condition I know how close the two of you are but it’s been really hectic around here.”
“Don’t worry Dr. Tanner I know how busy it’s been. I’ve spent hours operating on his son Steve. I wanted to tell Mark how he is.”
“I’m sorry Dr. Travis Dr. Sloan became upset when he came to and I couldn’t find out what had been happening with his son. I was worried about his health so I gave him a sedative. He should be sleeping for several hours.”
“Maybe it’s for the best at least right now.”
“What do you mean?”
“I had to put Steve in a drug-induced coma because of the swelling in his brain.. How is Mark?”
“Dr. Sloan suffered a mild concussion and a few bruised ribs. Nothing’s broken though. He should be back to normal in a day or so.”
“Mark will probably ask how Steve is as soon as he awakes I better go to ICU. Page me if Mark wakes up.”
“I will.”
Jesse enters Steve’s ICU room and looks at his best friend. Once again Steve was hooked up to life support. Only this time Jesse knew his father was not in danger of being framed.
Jesse watched his best friend sleep. He wished he hadn’t had to put his best friend in a coma but he knew it was for the best.
-----
“Darling she’s beautiful just like her mother!” Steve was by his wife Ellen’s bedside. They had been married for just over a year. She had just given birth to their first child, a daughter they had named ‘Stephanie Ellen’ in honor of both her parents.
“I love you Ellen!”
Ellen smiled. She and Steve loved each other dearly and now they had a child that they could share their love with. “Would you like to hold your daughter Lt. Sloan?” the nurse asked.
“Yes please.”
The nurse very gently took Stephanie from Ellen’s arms and placed her in her dad’s outstretched arms. Teaching him the correct way to hold his baby daughter.
After several minutes another nurse came in. I’m sorry but there’s a very anxious grandfather who just can’t wait anymore.
“Is it alright Ellen? Steve asked.
“Of course Dear.”
Mark came in and fell in love with his granddaughter. Steve and Ellen knew the feeling. They had fell in love with her at first sight also.
“May I Steve?”
“Sure Dad.”
The nurse took Stephanie from Steve and placed her in her grandfather’s arms. Mark looked at her such an angel. Are you two still going to name her Stephanie Ellen?”
“Yes Dad. We want our first child to have both of our names.”
Steve, Ellen, Mark, and Stephanie spent some time together. Finally the nurse said that was enough for Stephanie and placed her back in her incubator. She also told the proud father and grandfather that Ellen needed her rest.
Steve and Mark said their goodbyes and Steve kissed his wife softly on the cheek before leaving to let Ellen rest.
Mark and Steve were met by Jesse and Amanda who had tried to wait patiently. “Well?” Jesse said eagerly.
“Jess, Amanda I have a beautiful healthy, baby girl!”
“Steve, Mark congratulations!” Jesse and Amanda were so happy for their friends.
“Steve did you and Ellen name her Stephanie like you talked about?”
“Yes Amanda we did. Come on let’s go to the nursery viewing and you two can take a look.”
Jesse and Amanda saw Stephanie through the window in the neonatal ward.
“She’s adorable Steve. Reminds me of CJ when he was first born.”
“Thanks Amanda!”
“You know Steve I wouldn’t believe that you could have a daughter as pretty as Stephanie. Must take after her mother.” Jesse kidded his best friend.
“Thanks Jesse.” Steve smiled. All was right with the world. A beautiful wife and daughter, his father was alive and well, and his two best friends were with him.
-----
Jesse had sat looking at his best friend for several minutes. Wondering what Steve was thinking of, or if he was even thinking at all. So much still to learn about the human brain. Jesse wasn’t sure if Steve would be dreaming or was so deep in his drug-induced coma that Steve had no thoughts as he laid there motionless. The machines once more breathing for him.
“Goodbye Steve. I’ll be back later. And Steve don’t worry about your dad he’s going to be just fine he just needs rest.”
Jesse walked out of the ICU and started looking for answers. He wanted to know why his two best friends were in the hospital. One of them fighting for his life.. Again!
“Nurse have the police been down here to fill us in on what happened?”
“Captain Newman is down in pathology waiting for news of some of the victims who didn’t make it.”
“How many people died?”
“Two so far.”
“I hope there’s no more casualties.” Jesse sighed. He was very worried about Steve. “I’ll be in pathology for a few minutes then I’ll check on some of my patients.”
“Ok Dr. Travis.”
Jesse went down to pathology where Amanda and her assistants had been working. He spotted Captain Newman outside the door. “Captain Newman what happened?”
“As far as we’ve been able to find out a teenager was playing with a laser and shining it in the eyes of drivers at random who were passing through an underpass. Lt. Sloan was one of the people who was hit with the laser in his eyes.”
“Have you found the teenager yet?”
“No I have my men checking the local high schools and the neighborhoods around the area but so far no luck.”
“How did the kid get a laser anyway?”
“I’m surprised Doctor. You can learn how to operate one on the Internet. It’s also fairly easy to purchase one.”
“What’s going to happen to the kid?”
“That’s going to depend on the judge and the jury. But mostly likely because of his age he’ll be tried in juvenile court. If he’s 17 we can try and get him tried as an adult.”
“I can’t really say how I feel. I hate to see a young person go to jail for a long time but at the same time my two best friends are here because of his reckless behavior.”
“I understand Doctor. I know Lt. Sloan tries a great deal to help troubled teens before they do something like this..What about the Lt. Sloan’s eyes will he be able to see?”
“The laser should have no effect on his eyes captain.”
“That’s good I’ve been wanting to talk to Lt. Sloan but I thought he might want to know what we have found out first.”
“Captain Newman I had to put Steve in a drug-induced coma to help with the swelling of his brain.”
“Oh no! How is Dr. Sloan taking it?”
“Mark was also injured but luckily not as bad. Dr. Tanner gave him a sedative to let him sleep. That reminds me I better get back on my rounds and then wait for Mark to wake up. Someone needs to be with him when he wakes up. Also I’m the best one to tell him about Steve.”
“I agree Dr. Travis. Give my best to Dr. Sloan, and I hope you know we’ll all be pulling for Lt. Sloan. I’ll be sure to notify one of you if we have any progress in the case.”
“Thanks Captain. I’ll see you later.”
-----
Jesse continued on his rounds and then he went to Mark’s room to wait for him to wake up. Jesse didn’t want anyone else telling Mark about his son.
Jesse noticed Mark’s eyes open and went to stand by Mark’s bed. “How’s Steve?” Jesse knew that the first words out of Mark’s mouth would be to ascertain how his son was.
“Mark” Jesse tried gently. “Steve’s in ICU. I’m sorry but I had to put him in a drug-induced coma.”
“My son! I have to see him!” Mark tried desperately to get up out of bed but Jesse pushed him down.
“Mark I’m sorry. But you’ve been injured too. You need to lie here and try to rest.”
“How can I rest Jesse when my son may die?”
“Mark we’re doing everything we can you know that. But you have a mild concussion and a couple of bruised ribs. You need your rest.”
“I have to see Steve!” Mark pleaded once more. Mark calm down. I’ll talk to Dr. Tanner. Maybe between the two of us we can arrange for you to be transferred to the ICU.”
“Thanks Jesse!”
“You’re welcome Mark. But you are not going there without a wheelchair and your doctor’s permission is that clear Mark?”
Mark heaved a sigh. “Now I know how Steve feels when I sometimes forget he’s a grown man.” Thoughts of his son quickly came to mind. He also knew that Father’s Day was near. Once more it would be spent by his son’s bedside. The only present Mark wanted again this year was to have more time with his son Steve.
Jesse talked it over with Dr. Tanner. They both agree it was best for both Sloans if they were in the same room together. Dr. Tanner knew that was the only way his patient would get the rest his body needed. So arrangements were made and soon Mark was in a hospital bed by his son.
“Steve I’m right here. They moved me into your room so we can be together. Don’t worry son I’m alright. You swerved so your side would take the greatest impact. I love you son. Please come back to me, to us.”
-----
Stephanie was three years old. Her grandfather had hired a clown to entertain her and her younger brother and sister for her birthday. Twins one-year-old Katherine Carol, and James Mark. After Steve’s mother, sister, grandfather, and father. Ellen had never been close to her relatives.
The kids were having a fun time. It wasn’t clear though who had been having the most fun the children or the adults. Mark, Jesse, Amanda and CJ had come to enjoy the day with their family and friends.
Steve looked around at his family. He felt truly blessed. There was a time that he didn’t think it would be possible that he would find a wife that could love him and not be turned off by him being a cop.
Ellen had proven she intended to stay with Steve a few months after the birth of their twins. Steve had been shot. It had been touch and go but Jesse had managed to pull his friend through. Ellen and Mark had stayed with each other. Each drawing support from the other. Amanda knew she could help out the most by taking care of Steve and Ellen’s three little children. With the help of her son CJ who was now a young teenager. Together they had all helped with Steve’s recovery and rehabilitation. Ellen coming to see her husband at the hospital when ever she could.
-----
Mark looked at his son sleeping peacefully. It was Friday night. Tomorrow would be Saturday. One more day until Father’s Day. How Mark wished that Steve could be woken up then. Jesse had come by to check on Steve and had given Mark the bad news. He needed to keep Steve under. Jesse made it clear as best he could that it was very likely Steve would have to be in the drug-induced coma on Sunday. Monday morning he would see about reducing the drugs and letting Steve gradually wake up.
There was a quiet knock and Captain Newman came in after Mark told the person to enter. “Mark I thought you’d like an update.”
“Yes Captain I would. I’ve just been lying here thinking of my son. I’m sorry I haven’t thought much about the other victims. How many were injured?”
“Dr. Sloan that’s understandable. There were fifteen people injured including you and Steve. So far only two people have died.”
“Have you found the teenager yet?”
“No Dr. Sloan. We do have an artist sketch that may help. Don’t worry we’re going to do all we can just take care of yourself and your son Dr. Sloan.”
“I will thank you Captain.”
Captain Newman walked over to Steve’s bedside. “Lieutenant you get better that’s an order you hear?”
-----
It was Steve’s birthday. His father had given him tickets to Disneyland. Mark had been waiting for years to be able to do this. Mark asked if he could tag along to help take care of the kids who were now 4 and 2 years old. What Mark really wanted was a chance to go on the rides. No matter how old Mark became he was never too old to behave like a child. Being with his grandchildren gave Mark a chance to be one.
They all had a great time. When they returned home the kids told their Uncle Jesse and Aunt Amanda how funny Grandpa was.
Steve had one more day off. Steve and Ellen decided to spend the day by themselves. Mark was more than happy to watch his grandkids.
Steve and Ellen enjoyed their special day together. They loved their kids tremendously but it was nice once in a while to just spend the day with each other.
The next day Steve said goodbye to his wife and children and went back to work. Captain Newman wanted Steve in his office to talk about his latest case.
-----
Mark woke up. It was Saturday morning. He had hoped that he would just sleep the weekend away. There really was no point Mark thought. His son was still lying in the bed beside him drugs being pumped into him to keep him asleep while his brain healed.
Dr. Tanner came by to see his patient. He told Mark that he would release him in the afternoon if he promised to take it easy during the weekend. Mark told him not to bother. He wasn’t leaving the hospital with his son in his condition.
Amanda and Jesse came by as often as they could to try and cheer Mark but all he wanted was to see his son with his eyes open and together spending some father and son moments.
Captain Newman came by also to let Mark know they still didn’t have the teenager involved in custody. They had an anonymous tip that the teenager’s first name was ‘Jeremy’ but that wasn’t very much to go on considering the police did not know how reliable the tip was.
In the late afternoon Dr. Tanner declared Mark well enough to be discharged. Mark again told him not to bother he wasn’t leaving. Then he asked Dr. Tanner to give him another sedative so he could sleep the rest of Saturday and hopefully Sunday also. Dr. Tanner understood how Mark felt being a father himself but he knew it wouldn’t be right. Mark would have to go through Father’s Day without Steve being conscious.
Amanda had to go home to spend time with her son CJ but Jesse stayed by Mark’s side. Jesse watched his best friend sleep assisted by the drugs that were being pumped into him. He wished that he could hear his best friend complain about the salads on the menu of their restaurant or hear Steve get excited with being able to eat hospital food.
Jesse stayed with Mark as long as he could only leaving to attend his patients or grab a bite to eat. Jesse made sure Mark was given food in the ICU but Jesse also knew his mentor wouldn’t have much of an appetite.
Somehow Mark had managed to get some sleep unassisted by any sedative or sleeping pill. When he woke up it was Sunday morning- Father’s Day.
-----
Father’s Day had finally came. Stephanie, Kathy, and James had been looking forward to this day for days, weeks.
Steve started his special day with breakfast in bed served by his three little children now 5 years old and 3 years old assisted by his wife.
Ellen gave Steve a present. It was a card that told him he could have some time for himself today and do whatever he wanted. Steve thanked his wife and kids and enjoyed being showered with affection. Later in the afternoon while the kids were asleep Steve kissed his wife goodbye and went to spend time with his father.
Mark was delighted to see his son. They enjoyed being together to talk about the old days and to take pleasure in the new ones with Steve enjoying Fatherhood. Mark not only had being a Father to delight in but the added joy of being a grandfather also. Steve invited his father over to his house. They had thought a movie together with Ellen and the kids would be a great way to spend part of their special day. After the movie Mark helped tuck his grandchildren in bed by singing them a song the same song he had sung to Steve and Carol when they were younger - ‘Hush-a-bye-Mountain’.
-----
‘Father’s Day’ Mark contemplated a day he should be able to spend with his children. But his daughter Carol, whom he loved so much had died. As for his son Steve, whom he loved equally he was still in his drug-induced coma and would stay that way through out the day. Mark knew this day would just drag on.
Jesse and Amanda did what they could for Mark. They each considered Mark like a father to them and Steve like their older brother. Mark appreciated Jesse and Amanda’s efforts but no matter how much he cared for them it was his son that he wanted to be with, any place else but the hospital.
Mark laid there on his hospital bed staring at his son. He looked just like a little boy when he was sleeping. Mark carefully got up since Dr. Tanner had declared Mark well enough to be discharged and went to sit by Steve’s bed. He held his son’s hand and started singing quietly ‘Hush-a-bye-Mountain’ a favorite song of Steve’s when he was younger.
Mark was sitting there talking quietly to Steve telling his son how much he loved him, when Captain Newman breezed in.
“Excuse the interruption Dr. Sloan I thought you would like to know in person that we found the teenager.”
“That’s great! Do we know why he did it?”
The captain sighed. “This is another hard case to deal with. The teenager Jeremy is 16 years old which means the prosecution won’t seek to send him to adult court, but this probably wouldn’t have happened if he had the attention he craved from his father.”
“What are you trying to get at Captain?”
“Jeremy’s mother died a year ago. His father took up drinking to ease the pain. His father bought Jeremy the laser gun as a way to get him out of the house so he’d be free to drink in peace.”
“So your saying because the father totally ignored his son he went and used his laser gun in a reckless manner endangering the lives of others including myself and my son’s.”
“Yes, Mark. As I said this is a difficult case.”
“I remember when Steve’s mother died. Steve and I both had a hard time dealing with our pain but I never wanted to shut him or Carol out. In a way I probably did. I’m just glad we were able to work things out.
Captain, Steve cares a great deal for the youth I’m sure he’d like to do what he could to help Jeremy.”
“I know Mark. I’ll see what I can do. In the meantime hang in there.”
“Thank you Captain.”
“Mark one more thing has Dr. Travis told you when he’s going to bring Steve out of his coma?”
“Jesse’s going to check on him again Monday morning if all looks as well as can be expected Jesse will stop the medication that is being pumped into Steve to keep him asleep.”
“Ok goodbye Mark. Goodbye Steve.”
-----
Christmas Day, Steve, Ellen, the kids, and Mark had been enjoying Christmas together. Steve, Ellen, and Mark were delighted with the screams of delight as the kids discovered what Santa Claus had given them.
In the early afternoon Ellen informed her family that there was another extra special present coming. Their 4th child who was due any day had chosen Christmas day to arrive.
Steve rushed Ellen to the hospital while Mark watched his grandkids. He called Amanda over so he could get to the hospital also. As soon as Amanda came Mark rushed to the hospital so he could be there for the birth of his 4th grandchild.
Ellen gave birth to another daughter. Steve and Ellen decided to name her Angela Noel because she was born on a special day. Steve and Ellen both knew that before long everyone including them would be calling her ‘Angel’.
Jesse, Amanda and CJ were ecstatic over the wonderful news.
-----
Mark didn’t think Father’s Day would ever end but finally it was night. Monday would be coming soon. Not soon enough for Mark though.
Mark laid in bed tossing and turning trying to sleep. But he was so anxious that tomorrow his son may be waking up if Jesse thought it was time.
At long last Jesse examined Steve and decided it was time to stop giving Steve the medication that was keeping him asleep.
After several hours Steve slowly opened his eyes. Mark, Jesse and Amanda were by his side.
“Welcome back son!” Mark said with pure love and devotion to his son.
Steve looked around and smiled. “Hi Dad.” Steve said softly.
Before his dad or friends could say anything else Steve asked “Where’s Ellen?”
“Who’s Ellen?” wondered Jesse.
Steve was surprised. “Is there something wrong Jesse how many Ellen’s do you know? I’m talking about my wife! Where is she? Where’s my kids?”
“Steve, son Mark said sadly you were just dreaming I’m sorry.”
“No it can’t be a dream!”
“I’m sorry Steve.” Amanda voiced her regret.
“Jess please put me back under!” Steve pleaded.
“Steve!” His father said surprised.
“Please Dad. I thought I was happy before and I was. But now, all I want is to live my dream life for real.”
-----
Mark was worried since waking up and finding out his son didn’t have a wife or children as he had dreamt Steve had become despondent. Mark was worried about his son’s mental state. His son had no desire to get better.
“Steve son please. I need you, we need you back. I know it was a shock to find out you had been living another life in your dreams, but please son we love you.”
“You loved me in my dreams too Dad. And you were happy too. We all were!”
“Son this Ellen you spoke about she must be around somewhere. I do know Steve that you are not going to find her moping around refusing to work on getting better.”
“You really think she’s out there Dad?”
“Yes Steve I do. I don’t know where but she’s there. You’ll find each other Steve.”
“Then I better concentrate on getting better. Jesse told me if I don’t start working out and building my muscles up it may take me a long time to be able to walk again if ever.”
Mark was thankful that they had finally gotten Steve to listen. Mark had remembered Jesse’s urgent request earlier to get Steve to attend physical therapy. But at the time Steve had seen no reason to bother.
A couple of weeks later Jesse had declared his friend well enough to leave the hospital but with strict understanding that he wouldn’t be able to work as a police officer for at least a month or more.
As Mark was wheeling Steve out which was a common hospital rule that patients had to be wheeled out Steve apologized for once again not being able to spend Father’s Day with his dad. Mark told him that it didn’t matter now they were together and Steve was conscious that’s all that mattered to him.
-----
Jeremy’s trial in juvenile court came.
Steve decided he was going to tell what happened. That was his duty. But since his dad had told him about Jeremy, Steve had taken it upon himself to do what he could to help the youth. Steve pleaded with the judge for leniency.
The judge had compassion for what Jeremy had gone through but still through Jeremy’s actions two people were dead. The judge had no choice. He had to sentence Jeremy to the maximum. He would be in Juvenile Hall until his 21st birthday.
Steve talked to Jeremy he promised to help him when he got out to turn his life around. He also promised to visit him when he could so Jeremy wouldn’t be alone. His father having felt ashamed of his son had disowned him, not caring or believing that he was mainly at fault.
There were court reporters interested in the case. Because of Jeremy’s age they couldn’t release his last name or show any pictures of him.
One of them Ellen Sharpe was very impressed that this one cop who was hurt by Jeremy’s actions and could have easily died had cared so much for this troubled youth.
“Lt. Sloan I’m Ellen Sharpe I’m a reporter. I’ve been listening to you plead for leniency for that youth and I must tell you I’m very impressed. I don’t think there’s a lot of cops who would try to help another person who had nearly killed them.”
“Miss Sharpe?” Steve said hopefully. He couldn’t believe his luck in finding the woman in his dreams.
“Yes, Lieutenant.”
“First please call me Steve. I’ve worked with a lot of youth to try and help them. Lots of my fellow officers also try to.”
“I’m sorry Steve if I was out of line.”
“No problem Miss Sharpe.”
“Steve, please call me Ellen. What’s going to happen to Jeremy?”
“Ellen, you heard the judge Jeremy has to stay in Juvenile Hall until he’s 21. I know you didn’t hear me talk to Jeremy in private but when he’s released I’ll do everything I can to help him.”
“Steve thank you for caring so much. I should let you get back to work.”
“Ellen, I’m still on medical leave. Let me take you out to eat. Maybe we can get to know each other better.”
“I’d like that.”
Steve smiled maybe his dream would come true after all.
