The Right To Remain Silent

Steve Sloan awoke to the smell of bacon and eggs. Steve knew his father was already awake, preparing a breakfast for the two of them. Steve looked at his alarm clock. It read 6:30. He had about an hour and a half before he was due at the precinct. Steve quickly arose from his bed and hopped in the shower. Around 6:50, he appeared upstairs and dressed to greet his father.

?

??????????? “Morning dad,” said Steve. “You didn’t have to do this,” as he sat down at the table and began eating his breakfast.

?

??????????? “It was no big deal son,” replied Mark. “Besides, if I didn’t make it, I probably would have awoken to burnt bacon and overcooked eggs.”

?

??????????? “Very funny dad,” replied Steve.

?

The two of them laughed. As the co-owner of BBQ Bobs, it was always a wonder to Mark and Jesse how Steve could so easily destroy a meal of bacon and eggs. Steve was an alright cook, but most of the time, he didn’t cook the meals. He was especially known to burn pancakes. Steve looked at his watch and noticed the time, 7:30.

?

“I better get going dad.” Steve said. “I’ll come by Community General around 1:00 and pick you up for lunch.”

?

“Sounds good Steve.” Mark replied. “I’ll see you around 1:00.”

?

Steve hopped into his truck and pulled out onto PCH. Steve was angry. The day was so good and he had to spend it inside the police station filling out paperwork. Around 7:50, Steve reached the police station and pulled into the parking garage.

About 10 minutes after Steve left, Mark left for Community General Hospital. He wasn’t due into work until 9:00, but Mark hated being by himself at the beach house when he wasn’t off. He never had enough time to do anything when he had work. Mark reached the parking garage of Community General around 8:30. He parked his car and entered the ER and headed straight for the lounge.

Once inside the lounge, he saw his friends Dr. Jesse Travis and Dr. Amanda Bentley. They both looked a little drained.

?

“Hey Jesse, Amanda. Is everything okay? You two look a little bit tired.”

“Oh hi Mark.” Jesse replied. “We’re alright. Just got a little busy here. We had a 3 car pileup and then a murder suicide came in after that.”

?

“My god,” replied Mark. “You must be exhausted. Why didn’t anyone call or page me?”

?

“We knew you wanted to spend a little time with Steve this morning,” Amanda said. “We’re honestly alright. If we would have really needed you, we would have called.”

?

“You better Amanda. You said there was a murder suicide Jess?” asked Mark.

?

“Yeah. It was a couple. Apparently the woman caught her husband cheating. She took the gun he owned out of the drawer, shot him, and then killed herself.” Jesse said.

?

“I’m not so sure Jess.” Amanda replied. “Something just doesn’t add up with the autopsy but I can’t figure it out. I asked Steve to come around noon and look it over. Would you mind joining us Mark?”

?

“No problem. I would love to look it over. I’m supposed to be meeting Steve for lunch anyway.”

?

At that moment, Jesse and Mark were paged to the ER and Amanda was paged to her pathology lab. Jesse and Mark raced to the ER while Amanda made her way to the Pathology lab. No offense, but Amanda’s patients never were on a schedule or in a rush. Unfortunately, they were all dead.

Mark and Jesse entered the ER and stopped. Two cars had collided headfirst and had 5 victims. Four of them were brought in on stretchers while the fifth was being carried off to the Pathology Lab for Amanda in a body bag.

As Mark and Jesse assessed the victims, they both stopped in shock. As they looked up, they saw Steve limping into the ER, his shirt covered in blood.

?

“Oh my god Steve, what happened?” Jesse asked? As any doctor would, he began assessing his friend’s wounds.

?

“Jess, its nothing,” replied Steve. “I was driving down PCH to a call I received when I saw these two cars going head on at each other. I thought they would swerve or something but no one did. I couldn’t just leave them there to die, so I jumped out of my car and ran over to the scene and started pulling the people out of the cars. I got stuck between the two cars once and I hurt my leg. It hurts a little but not real bad.”

?

“But the blood on your shirt, it’s_” Jesse began to speak when Steve interrupted him.

?

“It’s not mine. They were all bleeding from cuts and I guess I got it on my shirt while I was helping them.” Steve said.

?

“Well thank god. At least nothing happened to you.” Mark said.

?

?It was the first time since he saw Steve enter the ER that he took a much needed breath. Knowing that Steve was alright, he went back to take care of the victims while Jesse got a wheelchair and took his friend to an exam room.

?

When the chaos had ceased, Mark went to exam room 1, where he knew Jesse was treating Steve. He opened the door to the room and saw Steve sitting on an exam table and Jesse looking his leg over. Mark was glad he saw Steve there. He figured it was mostly because he was supposed to meet him and Amanda at the hospital soon so there wasn’t any sense in leaving. Steve hated hospitals since the time he was little. Even the time he was shot and nearly died, he left the hospital before he should have.

?

“Ow, Jess! What are you trying to do? Break my leg?” Steve asked.

?

“Sorry Steve. You lucked out, it isn’t broken. Looks like you just got a sprain or something. You may want to stay off of it for a couple days.”

?

“You worry too much Jess.” Steve said. “I’ll be fine. It only hurts when doctors decide to grab it as hard as they can.”

?

“Well I see the patient is doing just fine.” Mark said, “He’s not listening to orders and he thinks he can make his own diagnosis.”

“Hey dad.” Steve said. “Really, I’m fine, it’s just a little sore. By the way, has Amanda mentioned anything to you about an autopsy she wants us to look over?

?

“Well, now that you have changed the subject, yes she does.” Mark replied. “I called her right before I came in to see you and she said that she has to postpone the autopsy to complete the one of the victim that just came in.”

?

“That’s good,” said Steve. “At least I’ll have a bit longer of a lunch break.” As Steve finished his sentence, Mark’s pager went off.

?

“It’s Amanda.” Mark said. “I better call her and see what happened.”

?

As Mark made his phone call, Steve put his sock and shoe back on. At that same time, Jesse was arguing with Steve telling him he should use crutches. Mark laughed inside. He loved it when the two of them were together. They were like brothers. Jesse finally had the older brother he never had and Steve had the younger brother he never had.

?

“Steve,” Mark said as he interrupted the friendly argument. “Amanda just completed the autopsy on the victim from the car crash that came in earlier today. She said something isn’t right and she wants us to come down there and check it out.”

?

Steve hopped off the hospital bed. Jesse helped him down, much to Steve’s annoyance. Steve didn’t like asking for help. He knew something was wrong with his leg but until it prevented him from walking, he decided that a few aspirins were all he needed.

Steve and Mark walked down to the Pathology lab, a little slower than usual thanks to Steve’s leg.

?

“Steve, I really want you to be careful with that leg.” Mark said. “You really should be on crutches with it. People around here must think I’m crazy. I’m a doctor and I allow my son to disobey hospital advice.”

?

“Dad, I’m fine. Relax. Besides, yes I’m your son but I’m also 40 years old and it doesn’t matter what advice you give me. I’m old enough to make my own decisions.”

?

“Even bad decisions?” Mark said with a sort of laugh.

?

Steve chuckled back, “Yes, even bad decisions.”

?

Mark and Steve finally reached the Pathology lab. Amanda immediately saw that Steve was walking with a bit of a limp and a shirt that seemed to be a little smaller than usual for Steve.

?

“Steve, what happened?” Amanda asked. “Are you okay? You’re limping and that shirt you’re wearing is a fashion statement I would have never expected from you.”

?

“I’m fine Amanda.” Steve replied. “It’s a long story that I’ll explain at dinner later on tonight. As for the shirt, mine got a little dirty and Jesse had a couple spare ones in his locker. This was the biggest one he had.”

?

Amanda and Mark both laughed. Steve was very muscular, and not to mention a great deal taller than Jesse. Amanda looked Steve over, at least Jesse’s shirt showed off Steve’s rugged, muscular body a little more.

?

“Amanda, you said something was wrong with the autopsy you did earlier on the accident victim?” Mark asked.

?

“Oh yes Mark.” Amanda said. “The temperature of the body does not match the time of death for the time of the accident.”

?

“You’re saying he was killed BEFORE the accident happened?” Steve asked.

?

“Yes.” Amanda said. “According to the time of death I gather, this man was murdered at least two hours before the time of the accident.”

?

“That means this man was murdered,” replied Mark.

?

“And the accident on PCH could have possibly been to hide the fact.” Steve said. “I think it’s time we question the people in that car crash today.”

?

“Steve, I think you should run home and wash up first. It’s only 11:30 and I think you should also grab a new shirt.” Mark said. “I’ll call Captain Newman and tell him what happened and I’ll inform him that you’ll be back in either later on today or tomorrow morning.”

?

“Alright dad. I’ll only be thirty minutes tops. I’ll meet you in the lounge say noon?” Steve asked.

?

“Sounds good to me. See you then.” Mark said.

?

Father and son went separate ways. Steve went out into the parking garage of Community General and got into his truck. He arrived home and hurried down to his apartment. He quickly washed up and found a new shirt that fitted much better than the one Jesse had given him. While Steve was changing he looked at his leg. Something wasn’t right. It started to hurt a lot more and it was beginning to swell. There was no way Steve was telling his father or Jesse about this though. He was not going to be spending the night, let alone the day in the hospital. He had other things he had to do.

Steve returned to Community General at exactly noon and entered the hospital lounge. Inside he found his father, Jesse, and Amanda all waiting for his return.

?

“Don’t tell me you’re all here to help me question the victims?” Steve asked.

?

“Steve, come on. You know us better than that. We’re all doctors and this is a doctor’s lounge,” Jesse said with a sort of sarcasm.

?

“Plus we wanted to see how the shirt was fitting.” Amanda said and then began to laugh.

?

“Okay, very funny. You guys can join me while I question them but NO one says a word, got it?” Steve asked.

?

The three of them replied nearly in unison, “alright.”

?

Of the four victims that had been brought into Community General, one was easily scratched off the list of suspects since he was driving in a separate car. However, in the other car had been three young college kids, not to mention a dead body. The first suspect they decided to question was the driver of the car. He was a 20 year old kid named Dylan Matthews. Steve had an officer run his name through the records. He had no warrants, no arrests, not even a traffic ticket. Steve and Mark entered his room. Dylan had both of his wrists in casts, since the impact of the airbag had broken both of his wrists. Other than that, the kid was in good shape. Steve entered first and introduced himself.

?

“Hi, I’m Lt. Steve Sloan, homicide detective.” Steve said as he flashed his badge.

?

“Uh hi I’m Dylan Matthews, the reckless driver of the car. Thanks a lot for helping us out today. No offense but what does a homicide detective want from me? Did one of the people in the car die?” he asked.

?

“I’m afraid so Mr. Matthews, but not from the trauma of a car crash. He was dead sometime before that.” Mark said.

?

“What?!” Dylan said. He nearly leapt out of the bed. “How could anyone in the car have been dead before the crash? Everyone seemed fine. Everyone except..” Dylan’s voice began to trail off and his blood pressure began to rise.

?

“Mr. Matthews you need to calm down.” Mark said. “We’re just trying to get some answers.”

?

Slowly, Dylan’s blood pressure began to drop.

?

“I don’t know how this could have happened.” Dylan said. They picked me up last and asked me to drive. I never thought of looking in the backseat to see how everyone was. I just started driving.”

?

“Do you usually drive when you’re with your friends?” Steve asked.

?

“Yes, I like driving because some times they can drive like maniacs. I don’t want to die because of them but I guess I’m the one who messed up today.” Dylan replied.

?

“Thank you Mr. Matthews.” Steve said. “If we need anything else, we’ll come back later.”

?

Steve turned and followed his father out of the room. Once outside of the room, Mark was the first to speak.

?

“Steve, I think he’s innocent. I don’t even think he knew someone in the backseat wasn’t alive.” Mark said.

?

“I was thinking the same thing dad.” Steve replied. “We just got to find out who did this and why. So far we have no answers.”

?

“I think we need to pay a quick visit to the other passengers in the car.” Mark said. “It’s time we hint on that we know that their friend was murdered, not killed in an accident.”

?

By the time Mark and Steve visited the other two patients, it was nearly 1:00. They had noticed that during their questioning of the other two passengers in the car, their facial expressions never changed. Both father and son knew they were guilty but how could they prove it? Oh well, it was time for a nice lunch at BBQ Bob’s and nothing was stopping that.

Mark and Steve enjoyed their lunch and left BBQ Bob’s around 1:45. The two walked side by side. As they neared the car, Steve realized that he had foolishly left his car keys inside. Steve insisted that his father just continue onto the car and that he would be back in no time. Of course, thanks to Steve’s injured leg, he couldn’t seem to move any faster. Mark noticed this and worried and decided that as soon as they got back to Community General, Steve was having that leg re-evaluated. Mark continued to walk back to the car. He was close to the car, but Steve was nowhere near close to the door of BBQ Bob’s.

Suddenly, the sounds of tires screeching put Steve in a halt. He saw a car turning the parking lot and heading straight towards his father. For some reason, his father had never once turned back. Steve screamed in horror and ran as fast as he could toward his father. Unfortunately, his leg was slowing him down. Steve screamed his father’s name as he ran to him. Finally, Steve got close enough where Mark heard his voice. Mark turned to see a car coming right at him. At the same time, Steve was inches from his father. Steve grabbed his father and tried desperately to push him out of the way. Fortunately, Steve put himself mostly in the front of the car’s path but because of his leg he was not able to get out of the way or get his father out of the way completely. The two were struck with the car and thrown onto the ground violently.

Steve screamed right before the car hit him and yelled to his dad, “Dad, no. Get out of the way!” Then everything went black.

?

Steve awoke in a bit of a daze. The room was spinning but he saw the bright lights above him. He realized he must be in Community General. He was still very much out of it, thanks to the head trauma he received and the sedative Jesse had given him. Steve took a quick glance around the room. With all the strength he had, he threw himself violently up and yelled, “Dad, where are you? Dad!”

The sound of Steve yelling frantically woke Jesse immediately who was sitting in the corner of Steve’s room. He quickly jumped up and tried to calm Steve down. At the same time, he pushed down on Steve’s shoulders to get him to lie back down, which he was able to accomplish, thanks to the sedative. Usually, Jesse was no match for Steve but this was no usual circumstance.

?

With all his might, Steve looked at Jesse as the room spun and asked, “Jesse, my father. How is he?”

?

Jesse took a deep breath and replied. “Steve, buddy, it’s okay. Your father and you were both brought in together. Your father suffered a concussion and a few broken ribs but other than that he’ll be fine. I have him under some sedatives until you’re a little healthier. I can’t have him getting sicker worrying about you.”

?

“Me?” Steve said.

?

“Yea buddy, you’re pretty banged up. You definitely have a concussion and a few bruised ribs, but I don’t think they’re broken. Your leg on the other hand is in bad shape. It seems that you tore your meniscus in your knee. I wish you had listened to me earlier but then again, when does Steve Sloan listen? You’re going to be alright though and I promise that you’ll be able to see your dad in a day or so. However, you’re due to have surgery in an hour so I’m going to say goodnight for now.”

?

“Goodnight Jess.” Steve said. “Thanks for everything. I mean it” Steve said and he slowly drifted back to sleep.

Jesse left Steve’s room and went to check on Mark. Inside, he found Amanda asleep in the chair in Mark’s room.

?

“Amanda, wake up.” Jesse spoke softly.

?

“Oh Jess, hi.” Amanda said. “Is everything ok? I must have dozed off.”

?

“Everything is fine,” replied Jesse. “Steve is heading into the OR for his knee now and Mark probably won’t stir for awhile. Go home and get some rest. I’ll stay here with him and wait for news on Steve.”

?

“Are you sure Jess? I hate to leave you alone.” Amanda asked.

?

“I’ll be fine.” Jesse said. “I’ll call you if there is any change.”

?

Amanda got up from the chair in the room and said goodbye to Jesse and left. Jesse took over Amanda’s position and sat waiting for Mark to wake up.

At the same time, Steve was being wheeled into the ER for surgery. He opened his eyes for a quick second one last time before he entered the OR and then drifted back to sleep.

Mark opened his eyes and realized he was staring at the ceiling. He knew he had to be in Community General, after all, he knew what the place looked like from every angle. He couldn’t figure out how he got there and he wasn’t completely sure why he was there. He knew something had happened though. His ribs hurt like hell and his head felt as though it was about to burst.

Mark began surveying the room. Everything was a bit blurrier than usual, and spinning a little bit too. He noticed his friend and colleague Jesse sitting in a chair in the corner of the room. Jesse was looking out the window and he didn’t seem to notice that Mark had begun to wake up.

?

“Jess?” Mark asked. “What happened?

?

Suddenly Jesse became aware of the voice calling his name. It was Mark’s voice. He turned around and noticed that Mark was awake, but still a little groggy. Slowly Jess approached the hospital bed.

?

“Hey Mark.” Jesse said. “How are you feeling?”

?

“Sore Jess,” Mark replied. “And my head is really bothering me.”

?

“You can thank the concussion for that.” Jesse said. “Mark, do you know what happened?”

?

“Jess, I know something happened, but I can’t remember exactly.” Mark paused for a moment and thought. “We had just finished having lunch at BBQ Bob’s and we were on our way back to the car.”

?

Mark paused once again so Jesse decided to ask him another question to help bring his memory of the accident back. After all, no one was truly sure of what happened. Neither Steve nor Mark had been awake to answer any questions. “Do you know what else happened?”

?

Slowly Mark spoke, “Steve forgot his keys in the restaurant and went back for them. Suddenly, I heard Steve screaming at me and when I looked over my shoulder, this car was coming straight for me. I didn’t get out of the way fast enough and Steve hurried back to me. Of course, his leg was injured so he didn’t get there very fast and he tried to push me out of the way. He pushed me enough where he put himself in front of the car and I only got the minor part of it.” Mark stopped. Suddenly he asked frantically, “Jess, how’s Steve? Is he okay? Can I see him?”

?

“Mark, relax.” Jess said. “I can’t have you getting sick over this. That’s why I had you on some sedatives for awhile, at least until Steve was out of the OR.”

?

“The OR!?!” Mark was almost yelling. “Jesse, please what happened? Is he okay? Is he going to be okay?”

?

“Mark please calm down.” Jesse said.

?

Slowly Mark began to calm down.

?

“Steve will be okay, in time. He suffered a concussion and seemed to be a little more confused than you but I still haven’t evaluated him enough to be sure. He was a little bit responsive when he came in but I couldn’t have the two of you worrying about each other so I put you both on sedatives. He also suffered from some very bruised ribs but they don’t appear to be broken and he most likely sprained his wrist but I can’t be sure yet. I haven’t had anytime to evaluate his minor injuries yet.”

“But you said OR Jess.” Mark replied. “Why would Steve be in the OR? Did he punctured a lung or something?”

?

“No Mark.” Jesse replied. “Steve injured his leg up pretty bad, the same leg that was bothering him this morning. He definitely tore his meniscus in his knee and they operated to fix that and check for other damage of his knee.”

?

“Is he out of the OR yet Jess?” Mark asked. “Can I see him yet?”

?

“The OR called me about an hour ago and said that they had just finished. They repaired his meniscus and also discovered a small fracture above his knee. Looks like our friend is going to be on crutches for awhile He’s not awake yet but I’ll let you see him under one circumstance.”

?

Jesse liked the way that sounded. For once he was controlling the situation, not Mark. Most of the time, Mark was the one with the situation under control.

?

“What is it Jess?” Mark asked.

?

“Let me do a quick evaluation over you. Check to make sure the concussion didn’t cause any permanent damage. Then I’ll re-wrap those ribs and check everything else and we can be in his room in the next 30 minutes.” Jesse said.

?

“Alright Jess, deal.” Mark replied. “But if he wakes up before that I’m going up there no matter what.”

?

“Alright Mark.” Jesse said. “I doubt he’ll wake up before than since the anesthetic and sedative are still wearing off.”

?

Jesse looked Mark over. He checked for damage caused by the concussion and found nothing. Next he moved on to Mark’s ribs. They were very sore. Mark felt like his son, not wanting to admit just how sore they felt. He had to make sure he was there when his son woke up and he was afraid that because of his sore ribs Jesse wouldn’t let him go.

As Jesse was finishing up his examination on Mark, Amanda entered the room.

“Mark how are you?” Amanda said. She walked over to his bedside and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

?

“Hi Amanda. I’m fine. I just want to get to see Steve. Jess is almost done checking me over.” Mark replied.

?

“Alright Mark, you’re fine. Nothing else is broken or damaged.” Jesse said.? “You will be in here for a few days but I can arrange for you and Steve to share a room.”

?

“Thanks Jesse.” Mark said. “That would be great. Can we go and see him now?”

?

“Sure Mark.” Jesse said. “I’m going to go up there now. I’ll have Susan get you a wheelchair and then you and Amanda can meet me up there. Amanda, can you make sure he doesn’t pull any of his IVS or anything out? He’s still a bit dazed from the concussion and I don’t want Mark acting like his son trying to save the day.”

?

The three of them laughed for a moment and then Jesse left the room. About 10 minutes later, Susan entered the room with the wheelchair for Mark.

?

“Hi Mark.” Susan said. “Glad to see you’re awake. Are you going to see Steve now or are you being discharged?”

?

“I’m on my way to see Steve.” Mark said. “Jesse says I have to stay here for another day or so and I decided to follow doctor’s orders unlike my son. If you’ll excuse us Amanda is about to take me up there.”

?

Mark got into the wheelchair with Susan and Amanda’s help and Amanda began to wheel him out. As they were just exiting through the door, Mark looked back to Susan.

?

“Sorry if I seemed rude Susan.” Mark said. “I just don’t want to go upstairs and find out my son has left against doctor’s orders. He’s definitely staying this time.”

?

Susan laughed. Mark was right. Every time Steve was in the hospital he would do something foolish or go against doctor’s orders.

“It’s no problem Mark. I know what you mean.” Susan said with a bit of a chuckle.

?

Jesse entered Steve’s room at the perfect time. He was beginning to wake up. Jesse would have enough time to look over Steve before Mark and Amanda got there. Steve slowly awoke. The first thing he saw was Jesse hovering over his bed.

?

“Jesse.” Steve said in whisper. “What are you doing?”

?

“I’m sorry buddy.” Jesse replied. “ I knew you were waking up and I wanted to start to look you over again and reevaluate you.”

?

“Oh I see.” Steve said. “Anything I can do?”

?

Jesse laughed. Steve was always trying to help out others even when he couldn’t help himself.

?

“No Steve, I’m fine.” Jesse replied. “Just tell me if I hurt you at all.”

?

Slowly Jesse began checking Steve’s ribs over, one at a time, by gently pressing on them. He wanted to make sure that none were broken which could cause serious damage if not checked over.

Steve sat calmly. He could only feel Jesse’s hands checking him over but it seemed like it was taking forever. He stared at the ceiling, not sure what to say. Suddenly he let out a scream.

?

“Sorry Steve.” Jess replied. “I barely even pressed down. I could see the swelling.”

?

“It’s alright Jess.” Steve replied. “ I know you didn’t do it purposely.”

?

The next two or three ribs hurt just as much but Steve knew they were coming. Finally, Jesse finished.

?

“Well,” said Jesse, “it looks like the 4 ribs in the lower part of your rib cage are very bruised thanks to the car that hit you. It’s a good thing you’re tall because there was less of a body to hit.”

“What about my leg Jess?” Steve asked as he slowly pointed to his left leg, which had a brace on it that seemed to start at his ankle and end at the middle of his thigh.

?

“Well Steve, I’ll be honest.” Jesse said. “You did some damage to it. You tore your meniscus in your knee and the muscle directly behind the back of your knee. The orthopedic surgeon couldn’t find any other muscle damage but he did discover a small fracture above your knee cap.”

?

“What does all that mean Jess?” Steve asked.

?

“It means that you’ll be in the hospital and some physical therapy for a little while, not to mention a nice pair of crutches.” Jesse replied.

?

Steve moaned. Besides the food at Community General and the occasional visits to see his colleagues, he hated being there. Most of all, he hated being there as a patient. He thought about the statement Jesse had just made. He was dreading the fact that he would have to use crutches. He told himself right then and there that he would make sure he was off those crutches as soon as possible, even if it meant he had to use a cane. It would be his next goal.

?

“What about my father?” Steve asked. “How is he doing?”

?

“I’m fine Steve.” Mark said.

?

The timing was priceless. As the words of Steve’s questions had left his mouth his father was entering the room, in a wheelchair, with Amanda. Mark and Amanda approached Steve’s bedside but Mark remained in the wheelchair.

?

“Dad, I’m sorry.” Steve said. “I didn’t mean to get you hurt too.”

?

Steve tried to raise himself on the bed but he was way too weak. He knew it but he tried harder this time wincing in pain, as he seemed to injure his ribs. Both Jesse and Amanda helped him lay back down; much to Steve’s frustration.

?

“Steve, lie down and relax.” Amanda said. She gave him a gentle peck on his cheek. “I need to run down to the pathology lab for a couple of minutes, but I’ll be back as soon as I can.” Amanda then gave him another gentle peck on the forehead and left the room.

?

“Steve, it’s not your fault.” Mark said. “You saved my life. I feel guilty because if I had moved, neither of us would have gotten hit. I also feel guilty because I basically watched you put yourself in front of the car and I didn’t try to stop you.”

?

“Dad, it’s okay. I know that you would have done the same for me. I’m just glad you’re okay.” Steve said.

?

Once again, he tried to raise himself a bit but was having trouble.

?

“Steve, you need to lie down.” Jesse said. “Those ribs are never going to heal if you keep trying to move around.”

?

“Steve son, promise me you won’t blame yourself for this.” Mark said.

?

“I promise dad.” Steve said. He still had a little feeling inside that he was responsible, but he knew it would pass.

?

“Steve, I’m going to take your dad back to his room to rest. I want you to do the same.” Jesse said. “You’ll be moved out of the ICU in the next 2 or 3 hours and I’ll get you a room where you and your father can be in together, okay? Until then, promise me you’ll stay put and sleep.” Jesse said.

?

“Okay Jess, I promise.” Steve said.

?

Steve hated doing that. He hated not being able to help himself and having to take orders, especially from Jesse. Nothing was wrong with Jesse but Steve always looked to him as his younger brother. He hated it when he seemed like his “little brother” was telling him what to do.

Jesse grabbed the handles on Mark’s wheelchair and took him back to his room. As they were leaving Steve’s room, Steve spoke.

?

“I love you dad.” Steve said.

?

“I love you too son.” Mark said as Jesse wheeled him to the elevator.

?

Once inside the elevator Jesse began to lecture Mark.

“I mean it Mark. Absolutely NO strenuous activity; I want you to rest for a few hours as well until I can get you two a room together. Steve is going to be fine but if you worry yourself, you won’t be fine. Promise me you’ll rest.” Jesse said.

?

“I promise Jess.” Mark said with a bit of a laugh.

?

It was funny hearing the man he once trained give him orders. Mark knew Jesse was a good doctor though and never questioned him. He had always been there for him when Steve was hurt and he always did a good job taking care of Steve.

?

?

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ~*~

?

?

The sound of Jesse’s voice awoke Mark.

?

“Hey Mark, it’s Jesse. Sorry to wake you up but the room for you and Steve is ready and I know you’re eager to get in it.”

?

“No problem Jess.” Mark said. “I’m glad you woke me.”

?

Mark realized a couple of hours had to have passed, but he couldn’t even recall climbing back into the hospital bed and drifting asleep.

?

“They’re going to serve you dinner in that room, if that’s okay.” Jesse said. “I figured you might want to have dinner with the all of us tonight.”

?

“All of us?” Mark asked.

?

“Well you and Steve are obviously going to be there and Amanda and I decided we would join you, if you don’t mind.” Jesse said. “Steve loves the hospital food and I decided that I never have really given it a good chance.”

?

Mark and Jesse laughed. That was one thing Steve LOVED about the hospital, their food. Most people hated hospital food, but Steve was obviously not like everyone else.

Around 7:00, Jesse wheeled Mark into his new room. Steve wasn’t there yet.

?

“Where’s Steve?” Mark asked.

?

“Oh sorry Mark, I forgot to tell you. Amanda went down to get the meals so that they would be nice and hot when you got here. I told the nurses that I wanted to get Steve myself, but I went to your room first.” Jesse said.

?

“Oh that’s no problem.” Mark said.

?

Jesse helped Mark into the new bed. He didn’t really need help, but with all the IVS and wires it was very easy to tangle yourself up without some help. Mark propped his bed into a sitting position.

?

“Go ahead Jess.” Mark said. “Go and get Steve. I’ll be waiting here and Amanda will probably be walking in any minute.”

?

Jesse left Mark alone and he went to the next floor to get Steve. He had just been released from the ICU and was ready to be transported to his new room.

?

“You ready to go buddy?” Jesse asked.

?

“Home? Sure I am.” Steve said.

?

“Ha ha, very funny. I mean to your new room.” Jesse said. “I told you Steve, you definitely will be spending a little time here in Community General, more than you would like.”

?

Jesse helped Steve into the wheelchair and took him down to the third floor where his room was. Jesse was a bit upset with himself when he walked into the room and found Mark sitting there still alone with no sign of Amanda.

?

“Mark, I’m sorry for leaving you.” Jesse said. “I thought Amanda would be here by now.”

?

“Jess, it’s no problem.” Mark replied. “I’m fine.”

?

Jesse helped Steve into his hospital bed. Honestly, Steve wouldn’t have been able to get into his bed by himself, even if the IVS and wires weren’t there. Jesse was a little concerned about his friend’s weaknesses. Even though he had an injured leg he seemed to be having a little trouble lifting himself with his arms. Jesse decided not to say anything yet. He decided to monitor Steve a little more closely. There were some logical reasons to Steve’s weakness, the whole accident, the sedative, and the lack of nutrition for the past 24 hours, things of that nature.

?

“Jess, I’m starving.” Steve said. “Where’s the great hospital food I love so much?”

?

“Sorry about that everyone.” Amanda said as she entered the room. “When I told her who I was getting this for, she insisted I take one of everything, free of charge.”

?

Amanda carried in a giant bag, which seemed to feed about eight people. By the end of the meal however, nothing was left thanks to Steve’s love for the hospital food and Jesse’s incredible appetite.

?

“Well how are you two feeling now that you ate something?” Amanda asked.

?

“I’m feeling alright.” Mark said. “How about you, Steve?”

?

Steve had been staring at the ceiling and seemed to be in a bit of a daydream.

?

“Oh sorry dad. I was daydreaming or something there.” Steve replied. “I’m feeling alright, but I can’t wait to get out of here.”

?

“Steve, I told you. It’s going to be a few days at least before you’ll be able to go home. That doesn’t mean you’ll be capable of taking care of yourself or anything though. Jesse said. “I almost forgot to tell you that you’re going to visit the physical therapist tomorrow at 9:00 AM tomorrow morning. It’s going to be too soon to really start anything, but a few exercises won’t hurt.”

?

“Jesse, are you sure that’s such a good idea?” Mark asked. “Especially with the fracture, also?”

?

“Yeah Mark. I talked to the PT earlier today and told him about it all and he said it should be fine. Nothing they do tomorrow is really going to involve weights or anything. Just a basic evaluation.” Jesse said.

“Well, would you look at the time?” Amanda said. “It’s already 9:00. I have to get home.” Amanda walked over toward Mark and Steve and gave them each a kiss on the cheek. “Goodnight guys. See you tomorrow.”

?

“Goodnight Amanda.” Father and son nearly spoke in unison.

?

“I better get going too. I have some work to finish it and you two really need to sleep, especially with those concussions you have. Don’t keep each other up, okay?” Jesse said.

?

Mark laughed, “Don’t worry Jess. I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that.” Mark pointed to Steve who was already half asleep in his bed.

?

Jesse walked out of the room and dimmed the lights. His head was pounding and the room was spinning. Mark was tired too but didn’t want to admit it. He waited up until he was certain his son was asleep and then closed his eyes.

Steve awoke around 8:30. He glanced over at his father who was still very much asleep. Steve didn’t even remember falling asleep the night before. He turned of the TV but stayed as quiet as possible, so that he wouldn’t wake his father. Around 8:45, Jesse entered the room with two trays. Mark began to wake up then too.

?

“Hi Jess. Thanks for the meal.” Steve said.

?

“Anytime, Steve.” Jesse replied. “Hey Mark, didn’t mean to wake you. I have breakfast here if you want it, or if you want to eat it later.”

?

It took Mark a few seconds to realize what Jesse had said. His head was killing him and he couldn’t shrug the dizziness off of him.

?

“No thanks Jesse.” Mark said. “I’m not very hungry right now.”

?

Truthfully, Mark was ready to throw up, but he didn’t tell anyone. He felt so sick and tired. He tried his best to act as normal as possible.

Around 9:00 Steve had just finished his breakfast. Jesse helped him climb into the wheelchair. He was still very weak, even in his arms. Jesse decided to mention that to the PT to get his advice on it. Jesse had checked Steve’s arm and wrists earlier and neither of them were broken or sprained.

??????????? Before they left the room, Jesse shot a glance to Mark. He looked kind of pale but Jesse also thought it may just be from waking up.

?

??????????? “Don’t forget Mark,” Jesse said, “your food is on the tray. I don’t want it getting cold on you.”

?

??????????? “Oh okay thanks Jess.” Mark said.

?

??????????? Jesse and Steve left the room and headed for the physical therapist. Mark lied awake for a couple of minutes before drifting to sleep in a dizzy state.

??????????? Around 10:00, Jesse returned, with Steve back to the room. The trip to the physical therapist had been a positive one. He assured Jesse that Steve’s weakness was from the accident, his injuries, the sedatives, etc, small factors that added up as one. He believed that in four to six weeks Steve could be brand new, but that he would still have to take an easy. Jesse promised himself he would make sure of that.

??????????? The two of them entered the room and discovered Mark asleep. The trays were gone and Jesse assumed that meant that Mark had eaten his breakfast and fallen asleep. Truthfully, one of the nurses had walked by and noticed Mark sleeping and just took both of the trays. Jesse helped Steve climb back into his hospital bed.

?

??????????? “Steve, I’m thinking about discharging you and your father tomorrow or the day after.” Jesse said. “You’ll have to come in everyday though as an outpatient for physical therapy and check ups, but that’s not a problem. I also decided that I’m going to spend the next couple of weeks at your house keeping an eye on you two.”

?

??????????? Steve began to protest but Jesse interrupted him.

?

??????????? “You are in no condition to take care of yourself yet and your father is in no condition to take care of you.” Jesse said. “When we get to your house, you’re going to be sleeping in the guest room and I’ll sleep in your room or on the couch. You are not allowed to do steps yet.”

?

??????????? “Jess, it’s only a couple of steps.” Steve said. “I think I can manage.”

?

??????????? “Steve,” Jesse replied, “There is no way in hell you are climbing any stairs. You’re going to be on crutches and you shouldn’t be putting any weight on that knee yet. It needs time to heal.”

?

??????????? Jesse left Steve in the room while he went on his other rounds. Before he left he checked Mark’s vitals. His blood pressure was a little high and he seemed to be running a mild fever, but Jesse decided that as long as a nurse kept a close eye on him, he would be fine. Jesse left the room and found Susan in the hallway.

?

??????????? “Susan,” Jesse said, “make sure Steve and Mark eat dinner tonight.”

?

??????????? “Okay.” Susan said. “I thought Steve loved the food here.”

?

??????????? “It’s not Steve I’m worried about.” Jesse replied. “Mark seems like he’s getting sick with something. Keep a close eye on me and call me if there is any change.”

?

??????????? Jesse entered Mark and Steve’s hospital room around 9:00. Steve had already eaten his breakfast but Mark was still asleep. Steve had to go to the physical therapist again today. It would be part of his routine for the next couple weeks. As Jesse helped Steve into the wheelchair, Steve began asking his friend some questions.

?

??????????? “Jesse, is my dad alright?” Steve asked.

?

??????????? Jesse noticed the look of worry on Steve’s face.

?

“He’s fine Steve.” Jesse replied. “Do you think something is wrong?”

?

??????????? “Well, I noticed that he hasn’t eaten much the past couple of days and he’s been sleeping a lot.” Steve said.????

?

??????????? “It’s normal for that to happen, Steve after an accident like the one he suffered.” Jesse replied. “He did have a virus or something but he seems to be doing fine. He’s just tired.” Jesse added.

?

??????????? Jesse wheeled Steve off to physical therapy and waited for him. Steve began some exercises today. First, he tried about 5lbs of weights by pushing them while lying on his back. He did alright. The physical therapist, Tony Smith, also checked Steve’s arms as well and he did fine with those. Tony and Jesse helped Steve back into the wheelchair. Steve didn’t like the wheelchair, but he liked being able to ride himself around everywhere also like he was back in one of his racecars. Steve wheeled himself out of the room.

?

??????????? “Steve, wait up!” Jesse called. “I’ll be there in a minute.”

?

??????????? “Alright Jess.” Steve shouted back. “I’ll be right out here if you need me.”

?

??????????? “Jess,” Tony Smith spoke, “I don’t see anything physically wrong with Steve’s upper body beside those sore ribs. He seems to be doing a lot better than the past couple of days.”

?

??????????? “I thought so too.” Jesse said. “I wanted to get your opinion though. He probably was just tired. How did you know about his ribs?”

??????????? “Jess, I’m not a complete idiot.” Tony said. “ I did look over his chart, but I could also see the pain they were causing him when we were doing that exercise on his back. I decided that the Physical Therapy better not get too involved until those ribs have healed a little more.”

?

??????????? “Okay Tony, sounds good.” Jesse said. “I better get going before Steve wonders why I’m taking so long.”

?

??????????? Jesse left the physical therapy room and entered the hallway. Further down the hallway, he saw Steve waiting by the elevator, popping wheelies in his wheelchair. Jesse hurried down the hallway to him.

?

??????????? “Steve, you’d better be careful.” Jesse said. “It’s not a racecar you know.” Jesse said with a bit of a laugh.

?

??????????? “I know Jess.” Steve chuckled back. “For some reason it reminded me of my old race car driving days.”

?

??????????? The doors to the elevator opened and Steve and Jesse climbed in. When they reached the third floor, they got off and went down the hallway toward Steve’s room. Everyone on the floor knew Steve, not just because his father worked there, but also because he had been there for about a week now. This also wasn’t his first visit to Community General.

??????????? Steve and Jesse reached the door or the room and were shocked when they entered to find Mark, sitting up, enjoying a meal, as cheerful as ever.

?

??????????? “Well, I see you two are finally back.” Mark said. “How did it go?”

?

??????????? “It went alright.” said Steve. “Wouldn’t you say so Jess?”

?

??????????? “Yeah definitely.” Jesse replied. “Steve’s doing good. How are you feeling Mark?”

?

??????????? “I’m feeling better than ever.” Mark replied.

?

??????????? That was the truth too. He couldn’t really remember the past couple of days too well. He only knew that he was sick, dizzy and definitely not hungry. He assumed it was a virus and decided not to bring it up to Jesse.

?

??????????? “I think I’m going to discharge both of you today.” Jesse said. “I already have everything I’ll need at your house and I stocked the house up with groceries. There is no reason why I should have to leave you alone except to go into work or to take one of you for your checkups. Hopefully, they’ll be scheduled for the same day though. Of course, there will be days where I’ll take Steve to PT, but that won’t be long.”

?

??????????? “Jess, I really appreciate everything you’re doing for us.” Mark said. “I don’t know how long we would have to stay here if it wasn’t for you.”

?

??????????? “It’s no big deal. I’m going to go and finish my rounds.” Jesse said. “I’ll be back around 3:00 with Amanda. We’ll measure you, Steve, for your crutches and get them fitted and then I’ll take the two of you home.”

?

??????????? Jesse left the room, and father and son spent the afternoon enjoying a meal and talking. Jesse entered the room with Amanda at about 2:45.

?

??????????? “Hey guys, glad to see you’re both up and talking.” Amanda said. “Steve, Jesse and I are going to help you stand so we can measure you for your crutches.”

?

??????????? “Why measure me?” Steve asked. “I’m about 6’”.”

?

??????????? “Well, about isn’t going to help.” Jesse said as he and Amanda helped Steve up.

?

Steve leaned on Jesse while Amanda measured. Amanda wasn’t sure how accurate it would be since Steve was about 8 inches taller than Jesse and had to slump to lean on him.”

?

??????????? “ Well Steve, you grew.” Amanda said. “You’re 6’2”.”

?

??????????? Jesse left the room to get a pair of crutches for Steve and get them fitted to the right size. He also found two wheelchairs to escort them out with. About 10 minutes later, Jesse reappeared.

?

??????????? “Alright, all the paperwork is finished and you’re ready to go. Steve I have the crutches and we can try them once you’re home to see if they’re the right size.” Jesse said.

?

??????????? “Won’t I need them to get into the house?” Steve asked.

?

??????????? “No, I talked to a couple of people and they’re going to let me borrow one of the wheelchairs for a couple of weeks.” Jesse said.

?

??????????? “No way, Jess.” Steve began to protest. “There is no way I’m going to spend my time in a wheelchair.”

?

??????????? “Steve, relax,” Amanda said. “You won’t have to spend all your time in it. It’s just to have around in case the crutches get on your nerves and it’s easier when you leave and enter the hospital everyday.”

?

??????????? Steve calmed down and Amanda unhooked his IVS and helped him into the wheelchair. Jesse helped Mark into his wheelchair but Mark didn’t really need help. His legs were fine. Jesse then handed Steve his crutches to hold on to as they left the hospital.

?

??????????? Once they reached the house, Mark headed for the front door while Jesse helped Steve out of the car. Jesse tried to get Steve to sit in the wheelchair but Steve protested.

?

??????????? “I’m not crippled Jess.” Steve said. “Just let me try them.”

?

??????????? Jesse walked side by side with Steve while he carried the empty wheelchair into the house. Jesse watched Steve closely making sure he didn’t slip or have any trouble. Jesse knew that using the crutches had to hurt, especially with his bad ribs. Steve wasn’t showing it though but inside, the pain was unbearable. His ribs hurt each time he swung his body. They finally reached the door and entered the house. Steve had to climb about five stairs, which he did, with Jesse’s help. He didn’t want the help, but he knew he wouldn’t be able to do it yet.

?

??????????? Jesse and Steve entered the living room where they found Mark already preparing dinner.

?

??????????? “Mark please.” Jesse said. “You need to relax. Let me cook the dinner. I already have something in mind.”

?

??????????? Steve and Mark sat on the couch and watched TV. They talked with each other as well as with Jesse, who was in the other room cooking dinner. After a wonderful meal cooked by Jesse, Mark went to his bedroom to relax. Jesse helped Steve get settled into the guest room and showed Steve where everything was.

?

??????????? “Steve, I brought a lot of your things from downstairs up here. Don’t worry I’ll put them back. If there is anything else you need, let me know. If you decide to go to the bathroom or go over to the window, use the crutches. You can’t put weight on that knee yet.” Jesse said.

?

??????????? “Okay Jess. I got it. I’m pretty tired though so I think I’m just going to go to sleep. By the way, you can sleep in my bed, I don’t mind. After all, I kind of took over your bedroom.”

?

??????????? “Oh it’s okay Steve.” Jesse replied. “I think I’m going to sleep on the couch tonight anyway.”

?

??????????? Jesse had decided earlier that day to sleep on the couch in case either of them woke up during the night and needed something. Not long after Steve and Mark went to bed, Jesse fell asleep as well.

??????????? The next week had the same routine. Jesse would take Steve back and forth from the hospital for physical therapy. Amanda stopped over at least once a day to see how everything was and tried to keep an eye on Mark while Jesse was with Steve. For the past week, Mark had been feeling on and off. Some days he felt great and other days he couldn’t think straight. He would get dizzy, disoriented, and sick. He tried to hide it though, by taking a lot of aspirin and saying that he was just tired. Mark didn’t want Steve worrying about him and he didn’t want Jesse worrying about him either.

??????????? Finally Saturday morning appeared. It was the one-day Steve didn’t have physical therapy. Mark had been having a bad morning but he tried not to show it. Since Steve was home, Jesse made breakfast, which meant he had to eat today. He only hoped that he didn’t get sick while he was eating.? That definitely would have worried Jesse and Steve. Somehow, Mark got through the meal and decided to lie down on the couch and watch TV. He hoped that he would fall asleep. Steve had been in physical therapy for about two or three weeks now and begged Jesse to go on a walk on the beach with him.

?

??????????? “C’mon Jess. Can’t we go for a walk? Tony said I can try putting some weight on it now.” Steve said.

?

??????????? “Alright, Steve. We’ll go for a walk but not a far walk and you’re bringing the crutches. I’ll let you try to walk on it though.” Jesse said. “The second it starts hurting, you’re done and if I think you’ve done enough I’m calling it off too.”

?

??????????? “Okay Jess I got it.” Steve said. “My ribs still hurt a bit anyway so I get out of breath a little easier. Plus I’m not in as good shape as I use to be.”

?

??????????? “You will be eventually buddy.” Jess said. “I can’t figure out why those ribs haven’t healed yet. Maybe I should tell Tony you need to take about a week off and let those ribs fully heal before you continue therapy.”

?

??????????? Steve was ready to protest but decided not to. He didn’t want Jesse to change his mind about the walk on the beach. Jesse helped Steve down the flight of stairs onto the beach. Once there, Jesse held the crutches in his hand and stayed very close to Steve. Steve walked a lot slower than his usual self, but that was expected. He still had some injuries and the brace he wore prevented him from bending his knee.

??????????? The steps Steve took hurt but he didn’t tell Jesse. He believed that the pain was a sign of improving and challenging his knee to heal. It was the first time he had walked on it in about three weeks. Steve and Jesse didn’t walk too far. Jesse knew that it was a challenge for Steve and he didn’t want to over do it. They passed about five houses and then Jesse decided it was time to turn around. Slowly, the two of them reached the beach house.

??????????? Meanwhile, Mark was eager to see Steve and Jesse left. He went into the bathroom and threw up. He knew he wasn’t feeling well. His skin was clammy. He looked at himself in the mirror. He was thinner than he had been and he also looked a lot paler. Suddenly the room began to spin. Mark started walking out of the bathroom back into the living room. He neared the couch and suddenly everything was blurred and dizzy. Mark felt himself falling to the floor in a giant heap.

??????????? Jesse and Steve had nearly reached the beach house. Jesse helped Steve back up the stairs. Jesse had forgotten about this and knew that it must be putting a bit of stress of Steve’s knee.

?

??????????? “Steve, when we get back inside, you got to use the crutches again. You can only put so much weight on it a day and I think you did enough for the day.” Jesse said.

?

??????????? They were about three steps from the screen door to the patio when Steve and Jesse heard a giant thump. They both froze for a moment having no idea what it was. Jesse immediately handed Steve his crutches and told him to wait there while he ran in and checked inside. Jesse ran ahead into the house. Steve felt helpless. He struggled up those last three steps but somehow managed it. The pain in his knee hurt incredibly though. As soon as Steve reached the landing, he dropped the crutches and hurried into the house. He went to the living room where he could hear Jesse’s voice. He couldn’t see anybody though. Steve rounded the couch and behind it, he saw Jesse hovering over the limp, pale body of his father.

?

??????????? “Oh my god Jesse,” Steve said. “What happened?”

?

??????????? “I don’t know Steve.” Jess said. “Call 911!!”

?

??????????? Steve reached for his cell phone in his back pocket. He dialed 911 and told them to come ASAP. He always carried his cell phone in either his back pocket or cell phone holder. Steve tried his hardest to bend down but the brace was restraining him. All he could do was stand helplessly over Jesse. Jesse checked Mark’s vitals intensely.

?

??????????? “Jesse.” Steve said. “ Is he going to be alright?”

?

??????????? “I don’t know Steve.” Jesse replied. “He’s breathing right now on his own and has a pulse. I won’t know what happened and why it happened until we get him to Community General and run some tests.”

?

??????????? Within five minutes, the ambulance arrived. There wasn’t much room, but Jesse and Steve managed to cram into the ambulance alongside Mark and the EMT. They reached Community General. Amanda had already been informed of the news. When Mark arrived at the hospital, Jesse whisked him away while Amanda cradled Steve and ushered him into the lounge for a cup of coffee.

Hours and hours seemed to pass. Steve looked at his watch. It read 8:00. Mark was brought into Community General around 5:45. He couldn’t figure out what was taking so long. He began to worry a little bit. Amanda sat and watched as Steve sat staring at the empty wall. Neither of them said much since the time they had been there. Steve didn’t talk about what happened and Amanda didn’t want to upset Steve by asking him about his father.

A little more time passed before Jesse entered the lounge. Steve was the first to see him and stood up immediately.

?

“Jess, my father. How is he?” Steve asked.

?

“Steve, your father is stable.” Jesse said. “After we brought him into Community General his heart rate slowed down a lot. It almost stopped.”

?

After Steve heard those words, he began to slump into his chair. He caught himself doing this and knew that he had to be strong. His father needed him. He pushed off the table with his arms and supported himself as he stood strong and tall.

?

“We got it back to normal though. He’s in the ICU right now. I can’t figure out what is wrong though. I can definitely rule out a heart attack. It seems as though Mark suffered from some post trauma from the accident, most likely caused by his concussion. I’m running some tests and I’ll have the results in the next hour.” Jesse said.

?

As Jesse finished his last statement, Steve got his crutches and left the room. He was heading for the elevator. Jesse entered the hallway.

?

“Steve, where are you going?” Jesse cried out.

“Where do you think I’m going Jess?” Steve asked.

?

The doors to the elevator opened and Steve got on.

?

“I’m going to the ICU. My father needs me.” Steve said in a very serious tone.

At that moment, the elevator doors closed. Jesse was left alone in the hallway. He went back into the lounge to get Amanda, but she convinced him that Steve needed to be alone with Mark right now.

?

“Jesse, he needs to be alone right now.” Amanda said. “He feels that he’s responsible for this whole accident and that he’s responsible for his father being in the hospital.”

?

“He told you that?” Jesse asked

?

“No.” Amanda said. “But I’ve known Steve for a while now and that is definitely what he’s feeling. Think about it Jess. If it wouldn’t have been for his leg, his father would have never been hit by the car in the first place.”

?

The doors to the elevator opened and Steve entered the hallway of the 4th floor. He walked down the end of the hall and went right, towards the ICU wing. He knew the hospital quite well, thanks to his many visits as a patient and also as a friend.

?

Steve entered the ICU wing and one of the nurses recognized him right away. Visitors were not usually allowed in the ICU, but Steve was no visitor. The nurse kindly escorted Steve towards his father’s bedside. She gave him a chair to sit in and a foot rest for his injured leg. She left not long after and Steve was left alone next to this father.

?

“Dad, I’m sorry.” Steve said as tears began to fill his eyes. “If it wasn’t for my bad leg and stubbornness, I would have been able to get you out of the car’s way and tale the full hit myself. I let you down dad. I’m sorry.”

?

Mark was unconscious, but he could hear Steve talking. Mark wanted to cry, but was unable. He listened as his son Steve continued talking. He could hear the stress in Steve’s voice yet Steve didn’t let himself cry. He promised himself he would stay strong. He had to.

Steve grabbed Mark’s left hand with his left hand and sat there. Suddenly he felt a squeeze on his hand and noticed Mark was holding his hand tightly. He knew his father had obviously heard him and recognized his voice. A sense of relief washed over Steve as it gave him more satisfactory that his father would be okay.

The nurse re-entered the room and noticed Mark squeezing his son’s hand. She felt good knowing that Mark was going to pull through it. She wheeled in a portable cot and set it up for Steve so that he could sleep in the same room with his father. She even helped him into the cot since the brace on his knee was still very much in the way. Steve stayed up for a little longer, talking to his dad before letting the darkness overtake him.

Amanda and Jesse decided that it would be best if Steve was left alone, for the night. The nurse from the ICU had contacted Jesse and told him that Steve was there and that everything was fine. Around 8:00 the next day, Amanda and Jesse entered the ICU and found both Mark and Steve still fast asleep in their beds. The two of them slowly approached the bedside and Steve woke up abruptly.

?

“What are you trying to do?” Steve said. “You scared the hell out of me sneaking up like that.”

?

“Sorry Steve.” Amanda said. “We didn’t want to wake you. How’s your father?”

?

“He’s doing good Amanda.” Steve replied. “Last night, I sat with him and was talking to him and he started squeezing my hand and stuff. He hasn’t opened up his eyes yet, but when I ask him to move something, he does. He’s going to pull through this.”

?

“That’s great news Steve.” Jess said. “If you haven’t noticed, it’s 8:30 now.”

?

“Jess, time doesn’t mean anything to me now. I just want my dad to get better.”

?

“He will, Steve.” Amanda said.

?

“Steve, I brought you a new pair of clothes from the beach house. Go wash up and get changed. You’re due in therapy at 9:00.” Jesse said.

?

“You can’t be serious Jess.” Steve said. “I can’t leave my father!”

?

“Steve he’ll be fine.” Jesse said.

?

“He nearly died Jess!” Steve shouted. “I can’t just leave him here alone.”

?

“Steve, I’ll stay with him and Amanda will go to therapy with you.” Jesse said. “We would never leave him alone. Amanda has her pager and if anything changes, I’ll have her paged ok. You’re not helping anyone until you can help yourself.”

?

“No Jess.” Steve said.

?

“Steve, how do you expect to help your father when he gets out of here?” Jesse was nearly yelling. “You can’t walk yourself and you expect to be able to help your father. You need to go to therapy. It’s right here in the hospital so you won’t be far. Now you’re going and that’s final!”

?

“Alright Jess, I’ll go.” Steve said.

?

Steve went into the bathroom, washed up, and got changed. Jesse went to Mark’s bedside and checked his chart while Amanda checked his vitals.

?

“He’s doing good, don’t you think?” Amanda asked.

?

“Who Mark, yeah I’d say so.” Jesse said.

?

“Well yeah Mark, but Steve too. He’s handling this well and you’re doing a good job convincing him to go to therapy. He really does appreciate it Jess.” Amanda said.

?

“Thanks Amanda. I know he does. I hate yelling at him like that though.” Jesse said.

?

A few minutes later, Steve emerged from the bathroom. It was nearly 9:00. Amanda and Steve walked together down to the physical therapy room.

?

“How are you doing Steve?” Amanda asked.

?

“Oh I’m fine Amanda.” Steve said. “I can put a little weight on my leg now.”

?

“No Steve, I mean about your father.” Amanda said.

?

Steve put his head down and continued on.

?

“Steve, I know you blame yourself for the accident. It’s not your fault though. If you hadn’t been there, your father would have been hit a lot harder than he was. You took most of the hit.” Amanda said.

?

“I know Amanda.” Steve said. “But how can I not blame myself. If it wasn’t for my leg, I would have been able to get my dad clear out of harm’s way and then this would have never happened.”

?

“You can’t think about the what-ifs Steve.” Amanda said. “You did a good job and your father appreciates everything. You have to get better first before you can help him. You need to get better so that you can be there for your father when he wakes up.”

?

“I know Amanda.” Steve replied. “I’m sorry for getting so angry with you.”

?

Amanda and Steve walked down the hall towards the PT room. They entered and Tony and Steve went off to work on some new exercises while Amanda sat and talked with some patients she recognized. Amanda watched Steve. She could tell he was trying extremely hard to get his leg better. He wanted to be there for his father. Finally, Tony told Steve to take a small break while he went and talked with Amanda.

?

“Hey Amanda.” Tony said. “I heard about his dad. How is he?”

?

“He’s doing good.” Amanda replied. “Thanks for asking. I need to ask you a favor though.”

?

“Sure Amanda, what is it?” Tony asked.

?

“I need you to keep Steve here a little longer than usual today.” Amanda replied. “The longer he is here, the less he can sit and worry about his father.”

?

“That’s not a problem.” Tony said. “I’m giving him a few new exercises today so we can spend a little more time working on them.”

?

“Watch him though Tony.” Amanda said. “I told him earlier that he can’t help his father until he helps himself but I don’t want him overdoing it trying to get his knee in better shape.”

?

“Not to worry Amanda.” Tony said. “In fact, I was thinking about surprising Steve telling him he can stop using the crutches and see how the knee feels. Of course, I’ll want him to keep them close by incase his knee starts bothering, but still. I’ll work with him on some techniques of getting around with that brace on his leg.”

?

“Thanks Tony. I appreciate it.” Amanda said.

?

Amanda sat back down and Tony went back and did some more exercises with Steve. Around 11:30. she signaled to Tony that he had done enough and it was time they headed back to Mark’s room. Amanda noticed Steve walking back to her, without the crutches, and decided to act as though she didn’t know what was going on.

?

“Steve, why aren’t you using the crutches?” Amanda asked.

?

“Tony said I could try walking without them.” Steve replied. “Isn’t that great news?”

?

“Steve, that’s great news!” Amanda said. “Let’s go see Jesse and your father and tell them the good news.”

?

Steve had almost forgotten about his father being back in the hospital until Amanda mentioned it. They walked, slowly, towards the elevator. They got off on the 4th floor and headed for the ICU wing. Amanda and Steve entered and were shocked to find both Jesse and Mark missing. They both panicked. Amanda wondered why Jesse hadn’t paged them. Finally, the nurse who had helped Steve earlier noticed Amanda and Steve and told them the news.

“Steve, your father was moved to a regular recovery room on the 1st floor about ten minutes ago. Jesse took him there.” The nurse said.

?

“Thanks.” Steve said.

?

“Let’s go see your dad Steve.” Amanda said.

?

??????????? Amanda and Steve hopped back onto the elevator and got off at the first floor. Jesse was waiting at the elevator to greet them.

?

??????????? “Jesse, how come you didn’t page me?” Amanda asked.

?

??????????? “ I was about to Amanda.” Jesse said.

?

??????????? “Jess, where is my dad and how is he doing?” Steve asked,

?

??????????? “He’s doing really good Steve. The tests I ran last night showed that he had some post trauma, as expected, caused by the concussion. He’s on some medication which is helping to keep the internal swelling down. He’s beginning to stir so you probably would like to get to the room to be there when he wakes up.”

?

??????????? “Yeah Jesse, I would. What room is he in?” Steve asked.

?

??????????? “ He’s in room 116. I’m on my way back so I’ll come with you.” Jesse said.

??????????? Amanda, Jesse, and Steve began walking to room 116. Immediately Jesse noticed that Steve was not using his crutches. Instead, he was carrying them with his left hand.

?

??????????? “Steve, why aren’t you using your crutches?” Jesse asked.

?

??????????? “Tony told me I can start walking without them, as long as I keep them close to my side in case I need them.” Steve said.

?

??????????? “Hey that’s great news!” Jesse said.

?

??????????? The three of them finally reached Mark’s room. They entered and noticed Mark beginning to stir. Steve moved to Mark’s bedside. About two minutes later, Mark opened his eyes.

??????????? “Hi dad.” Steve said. “How are you feeling?”

?

??????????? “Steve,” Mark said. “I feel okay. I’m sorry about yesterday.”

?

??????????? “Dad, there is nothing to be sorry for. I’m the one who caused this entire accident.” Steve said.

?

??????????? “Don’t you ever say that.” Mark said. “Accidents happen. You didn’t mean any harm to me or yourself. I’m sorry for acting like you.”

?

??????????? “Acting like me?” Steve said. He wondered what his father meant.

?

??????????? “Steve, my head has been bothering me for days. I haven’t said anything to anyone about it. Some days I felt good and other days my head was pounding, I was dizzy, and I couldn’t see straight. Finally it got me. Now I know what’s it like to be you.” Mark said.

?

??????????? “Well, did you enjoy being like me?” Steve asked with a bit of a chuckle.

?

??????????? “No not really.” Mark said. The four of them laughed. Everyone knew how stubborn Steve could be.

?

??????????? “Dad, I have good news.” Steve said.

?

??????????? “What is it Steve?” Mark asked.

?

??????????? “Tony said I can start walking on my leg and just carry the crutches. He said I probably would rather use a cane than carry the crutches and I agreed.” Steve said.

?

??????????? “Steve, I can take you to get your cane.” Jesse said.

?

??????????? “Hey Jesse thanks.” Steve said.

?

??????????? The two left the room and headed towards the orthopedic wing of the hospital to get a cane. Mark and Amanda sat and talked about the past few days About an hour later, they returned.

?

??????????? “That took a little longer than expected.” Mark said.

??????????? “You should have seen it Mark.” Jesse chuckled. “They were having trouble finding a cane that was big enough for Steve. Apparently all the men in the world except me are at least 6 feet tall.”

?

??????????? Mark laughed. Jesse was much shorter than Steve. Jesse stood at about 5’6” and Steve had about eight inches on him. Mark remembered the shirt Steve was wearing and began to laugh even harder.

?

??????????? “Don’t even tell me you’re thinking about the whole shirt thing.” Steve said.

?

??????????? “You got it Steve.” Mark said.

?

??????????? Amanda and Jesse also laughed. Amanda remembered seeing Steve walk into her room with a limp and a very tight fitting shirt that day.

?

??????????? “Steve,” Mark said. “We still haven’t solved that case.’

?

??????????? “Are you talking about the car accident involving the driver Dylan Matthews?” Steve asked.

?

??????????? “Yes.” Mark replied. “That body was definitely dead before the accident.”

?

??????????? “Dad, it’s been almost three weeks since that happened.” Steve replied. “Someone else has already taken on the case. I can try to find out who is working on it and get some information but the chief won’t let me have anything to do with it. He knows I’m not supposed to be working.”

?

??????????? “Okay Steve, see what you can do.” Mark said. “Something is really bothering me about this and I know the two kids in the back seat murdered him but I can’t prove how. Amanda, can you get me the autopsy on that victim.”

?

??????????? “Sure Mark, anything else?” Amanda asked.

?

??????????? “No thanks sweetie.” Mark replied. “Jesse, I will need from you the charts from those two kids. I think the answer to our problem lies in there.”

?

??????????? “I’ll have it to you in the next hour.” Jesse said.

??????????? Jesse and Amanda went on their ways and Steve called the department.

?

??????????? “Well dad, we lucked out.” Steve said. “Cheryl decided to take the case knowing that me and you would want to get our hands on it also. She’s coming by in about an hour to share what she has already.”

?

??????????? “That’s great.” Mark said. “Jesse and Amanda will be back around then with the autopsy report and the charts from the hospital.”

?

??????????? “Well, I’m starving.” Steve said. “How about we get something to eat before they come?”

?

??????????? “What did you have in mind Steve?” Mark asked.

?

??????????? “A nice full platter from the hospital cafeteria.” Steve said. “What can I get you?”

?

??????????? “Just get me something edible from down there.” Mark said.

?

??????????? Steve returned about 20 minutes later and the two enjoyed their meal. Jesse and Amanda came in about thirty minutes later and Cheryl walked in about fifteen minutes after them.

?

??????????? “Did you get the autopsy report Amanda?” Mark asked.

?

??????????? “Right here.” Amanda replied.

?

??????????? “How about the hospital charts Jess?” Mark asked.

?

??????????? “Got them right here also.” Jess said.

?

??????????? “Wait, don’t ask. Here is all the information I have on the case.” Cheryl said.

?

??????????? The five of them sat around and reviewed all of the information.

?

??????????? “Okay.” Mark said. “I think I figured out how they did it, but I don’t know how we can prove it yet.” Mark said.

?

??????????? “Would you care to share with any of us who are lost dad?” Steve asked.

?

??????????? “Oh yeah sorry.” Mark said. “The two kids in the backseat, uh Jenny Thompson and Jon Broder, killed the victim, Steven Jacobs, by switching his diabetic medication with a sedative and another medicine. The two together slowly interacted causing his body to slowly shut down. He could have been alive for some time too. It depends how long it took to set it.”

?

??????????? “That explains the blood pressure medication he had in his system.” Amanda said. “That was the problem before. I couldn’t find any problems associated with high blood pressure in his records.”

?

??????????? “That’s because there was none.” Steve said. “How do we prove they did it though dad?”

?

??????????? “I’m not sure Steve.” Mark said. “But one of their tox screens shows a trace of a sedative prescribed by a doctor and the other shows a trace of the blood pressure medication.”

?

??????????? “So they took their two medications and mixed them as one?” Jesse asked.

?

??????????? “Exactly.” Mark said. “Do you have Dylan Matthews address Cheryl? He was the driver of the car.”

?

??????????? “Sure Mark.” Cheryl said. “I already gave it to Steve. Steve’s just left to ask him to come to the hospital so that you can ask him a couple of questions.”

?

??????????? “Oh okay thanks.” Mark said. “I was wondering where he went to.”

?

??????????? Steve returned about twenty minutes later with Dylan Matthews. Both of his arms were still in casts.

?

??????????? “Hi Dr. Sloan.” Dylan said as he entered the room. “Are you okay?”

?

??????????? “I’m fine Dylan, thank you.” Mark said. “I have some questions I would like to ask you.”

?

??????????? “Is it about the accident?” Dylan said.

?

??????????? “Yes.” Mark said. “I’m sorry to bring it back up, but we need to figure out how Jenny and Jon killed your other friend. Can you tell me what you remember from that day?

?

??????????? “Uh, sure okay.” Dylan replied. “We were on our way to some cabin for the weekend. Jon and Jenny called and said that they would be stopping at Scott’s house first and then come to pick me up. They also said a “friend” was coming along and that I would meet them then. I agreed and when they picked me up, Jon asked me to drive. He pushed Scott into the back seat with Jenny and hopped into the passenger side. I remember looking into the backseat to see who this person was but I remember that he looked like he was sleeping and he was seated directly behind me so it was hard to see him at all.”

?

??????????? “What happened around the time of the accident?” Steve asked.

?

??????????? “It was weird.” Dylan said. “We were driving on PCH and there were no cars on the highway in front of us. Suddenly Jon screamed watch out and grabbed a hold of the wheel and twisted it towards oncoming traffic. Then we crashed. I never saw anything in front of us Dr. Sloan.”

?

??????????? “That’s because I don’t think there was anything in front of you.” Mark replied. “I think Jon deliberately swerved that car into traffic to hide their friend’s death. Do you know what Jon and Jenny had planned for that day BEFORE they picked you up?”

?

??????????? “Well Dr Sloan,” Dylan replied. “I know that Scott said when they picked him up, the three of them came inside and got some drinks. They each grabbed a bottle of water but Jenny made sure she opened everyone’s bottles for them. Maybe she slipped that poor kid something then.”

?

??????????? “That has to be it dad.” Steve said. “Now how do we prove it?”

?

??????????? “Simple, we pay a little visit to Jen and Jon’s houses.” Mark said.

?

??????????? “NO way.” Steve said. “WE do not pay any house visits. YOU’re staying right here in the hospital and I’m going, alone.”

?

??????????? “Steve, there is no way I’m sitting on this case any longer.” Mark said.

?

??????????? “Steve, I think it will be alright if your dad goes with you.” Jesse said.

“I’ve checked him over a million times and he seems alright. Just don’t be longer than a couple of hours and if you notice anything strange about him bring him right back Steve.”

?

??????????? “Will do Jess.” Steve said. “Thanks.”

?

??????????? Mark and Steve arrived at the home of Jon and were not surprised when Jenny answer the door.

?

??????????? “ Dr. Sloan, Lieutenant.” Jenny said with a sense of worry. “What are you doing here?”

?

??????????? “We came to investigate a murder.” Steve said. “We figured you and Jon knew all about it.”

?

??????????? “ I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Jenny said.

?

??????????? “Can we come in please?” Mark asked.

?

??????????? Jenny welcomed Mark and Steve into the house and into the living room. Jon was very shocked when he noticed Jenny walk back into the room followed by Mark and Steve.

?

??????????? “What brings you two here?” Jon asked.

?

??????????? “We have some unfinished business that needs to be finished.” Steve said.

?

??????????? “Well, I don’t think we can help you lieutenant.” Jon said with arrogance.

?

??????????? “I think you can.” Steve said back as he raised his voice. “We have a dead body and an attempted murder to solve.”

?

??????????? “What would you like to know?” asked Jenny.

?

??????????? “We just want to know what the motive is.” Mark said. “We know you put a high dose of a sedative and a dose of blood pressure into Steven’s water causing him to have an interaction in his body and slowly die.”

?

??????????? “You can’t prove that.” Jenny said.

?

??????????? “I think we can.” Steve replied. “Your hospital records each show a trace of each medication in your system. After all, they were your prescriptions and you had to take them. The autopsy report shows both medications in the system as well. All fingers point toward you.”

?

??????????? “I didn’t want to do it!” Jenny said. “He told me if I did it, everything would be okay!” Jenny was nearly shouting.

?

??????????? “Shut up Jenny.” Jon yelled. “Don’t say anything.”

?

??????????? “I’m placing you both under the arrest for the murder of Steven Jacobs and the attempted murders of myself and Dr. Mark Sloan.” Steve said. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law.”

?

??????????? “Wait Lieutenant!” Jenny yelled as Steve was reciting the Miranda. “What do you mean attempted murders of you two? I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

?

??????????? “Sure you don’t.” Steve said.

?

??????????? “She’s right Steve.” Mark said.

?

??????????? “What?” Steve replied.

?

??????????? “Jenny only helped kill Steven.” Mark replied. “Jon was the one who tried to kill us. He knew we would figure everything out and getting rid of us was the only way he would be able to get away with it. So he thought. Isn’t that right Jon?”

?

??????????? “Alright Dr. Sloan. You got me, but I almost killed you and your son.” Jon said. “All I wanted in life was to get rich and this was my only way.”

?

??????????? “How would killing Steven, me and my son make you rich?” Mark asked.

?

??????????? “OH come on Dr. Sloan. I thought you were smart.” Jon replied. “Steven had so much money, most of which he had gotten because of drugs. NO one knew it though, except me. With him dead, that money was mine. You were in my way so I needed you dead. You don’t think that I wouldn’t have made it big as the person who killed the notorious Dr. Mark Sloan and his son Lt. Steve Sloan?”

?

??????????? “Get him out of here.” Steve said. He motioned to the two uniformed officers who were waiting at the door.

?

??????????? “I’m sorry Dr. Sloan.” Jenny said. “I honestly had no idea.”

?

??????????? “I know that Jenny.” Mark replied. “I’ll make sure the judge does too.”

?

Mark and Steve returned to the hospital with another solved murder under their belt. Jesse and Amanda entered the room and questioned them.

?

“So what happened?” Jesse asked.

?

“Well, Jenny and Jon killed Steven because of drugs and Jon tried to kill Steve and me.” Mark said. “Poor Jenny only helped kill Steven for her love of Jon. I think the defense is going to try to make a deal to convict her of 2nd degree murder.”

?

“So everything worked out then?” Amanda asked.

?

“As according to plan,” Steve replied. “You know my father.”

?

The four of them shared a laugh.

?

?

?

?

ONE MONTH LATER

?

“How was your day?” Mark asked as Steve came into the house. He now walked without his cane, but still wore a brace that he would have to keep on for about another two weeks.

?

“Oh it was alright. Everyone at the precinct was excited to see me back.” Steve said. “I can’t believe it’s been almost two months.”

?

“Has it really been that long?” Mark asked.

?

“Yeah dad. Look at the calendar date. Today is August 20th and our accident was exactly two months ago from today.” Steve replied.

?

“My god.” Mark said. “Time really does fly.”

?

“It sure does dad.” Steve said.

?

Steve exited the room and Mark sat for a moment on the couch. He couldn’t believe two months had already passed since the accident. Jon and Jenny’s trial had already passed. Jon was convicted of first degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. He was sentenced to life in prison while Jenny was only convicted of second degree murder, thanks to a wonderful doctor named Dr. Mark Sloan. She would only have to serve five years, possibly on probation.

Mark sat a little longer and reflected on the past two months with his friends and family. Steve and he had been hit by a car. Steve injured his leg badly and was still in physical therapy for it though he was doing a lot better than expected. At this time, most patients are just being able to put weight on it but Mark knew that Steve was always determined and he made sure he beat the odds. Mark had been going to check-ups weekly at Community General to make sure there was no other post trauma. He began working again at Community General as well. BBQ Bob’s was up and running and the business seemed to be booming out of this world. Jesse had even found a woman in his life. Her name was Tammy Anderson and she seemed to be the sweetest girl ever. Life seemed great for everyone around Mark including himself. Steve re-entered the room.

?

“Hey dad. It’s 5:00. We’re going to be late for dinner. We’re supposed to meet Jesse, Amanda, and CJ by 5:30 at BBQ Bobs.” Steve said. “Dad, are you okay?”

?

“Oh I’m fine Steve.” Mark replied. “Must have been daydreaming there.”

Steve grabbed the keys to his truck and the two of them left the house. Steve was a bit ahead of his father. He went out and started the truck while his father locked the house.

?

“Dad, are you coming?” Steve replied from his truck.

?

“I’ll be right there Steve.” Mark said. Before Mark locked the door, he stopped and looked back at his home.

?

?“Home sweet home.”
