Mark's TV Appearance Disaster by
Beach House
“Dad I don’t think it’s a good idea you appearing on this TV show.”
“Steve it’s for a good cause. The producers of the TV show have promised to donate money to the favorite charity of all the older available bachelors who appear on the show.”
“You mean only the richer ones. Dad it sounds like a set up.”
“What do you mean Steve?”
“I mean that someone or some ones want to know who are the richest people in this area. Especially those that have been widowed or divorced for several years and are vulnerable.”
“Steve do I seem ‘vulnerable’ to you?”
“Of course not Dad but I have a funny feeling about this.”
“Don’t worry son. I’m only scheduled to be on for a few minutes.
Mark’s Turn On The TV show
“Dr. Sloan I understand that you’ve been widowed for quite some time.”
“Yes that’s right.”
“Where do you live?”
“I live on the beach in Malibu with my son.”
“Your son? And what does he do?”
“He’s a homicide detective. I help the police out from time to time.”
“I see. Do you have any other children Doctor Sloan?”
“Please call me Mark. I lost my daughter and her husband a few years ago.”
“I’m sorry to hear that..Mark. How do you and your son get along with each other?”
Mark was beginning to think Steve was right. “Look I love my son very much but I’d prefer we’d discuss something else.”
“I’m sorry Mark you’re right. Do you have any hobbies?”
“Besides solving murders I like to read books, mostly Sherlock Holmes, play chess with my son. You know just enjoy having all my mental faculties at my age.”
“Ok. Thank you. That was Dr. Mark Sloan of Community General Hospital.”
Mark was too embarrassed so he never bothered to tell Jesse or Amanda he was appearing on a TV show.
Beach House A Few Days Later
“Dad when was that special supposed to be on anyway?”
“Yesterday afternoon Steve why?”
“Why? I wanted to watch my Dad on TV but I couldn’t find it.”
“But Steve you were right there.”
“So can’t I take some delight in telling you I told you so?”
“All right Steve. You told me so. But I still don’t know what their motives were.”
“I’m sure they’ll let us know soon Dad. In the meantime Dad you be careful.”
“Yes Steve.”
Mark and Steve smile at each other and both leave. Mark to go to the hospital and Steve to go the precinct.
-----
Later that afternoon Steve shows up at Community General. “Dad can I have a word with you..in private?” he asks.
“Sure Steve come into my office.”
“What’s wrong son?”
“Dad, we now know what those people wanted that did that interview with you.”
“What?”
“There has been a kidnapping and at least two attempted kidnappings of relatives of the people who appeared on that show.”
Mark gets a frightened look. “Steve! What have I done!”
“Dad you didn’t know. You thought you were helping out.”
“But Steve I’ve put you at risk!”
“Dad, I know you didn’t mean to. Don’t worry I’ll be careful..”
“Son I know you’re keeping something from me. What is it?”
Steve sighed. “Captain Newman wants me to be the bait.”
“The bait!”
“Dad I’ll be careful. I’ll check in with you every couple of hours.”
“You better Steve.”
Steve smiled. “I love you too Dad. I’ve got to get back to work. See you later.”
Mark wasn’t appeased. He knew he had put his son’s life at risk appearing on the talk show.
Steve kept his word and had called every few hours. He knew how worried his father was.
-----
Steve was about to call his father again but he was told by the receptionist at the hospital that his dad was involved in an emergency and couldn’t be disturbed.
Steve was about to go jogging but then received an anonymous phone call to meet this person who had inside information about the latest kidnappings he had been working on. Steve was suspicious but he went anyway. Making sure all the doors were locked and the windows were closed before he left. He went to the warehouse where the caller said to meet being careful of any traps. No one was there.
While he was gone a man in a ski mask expertly picked the door open and walked inside. He made sure he didn’t disturb anything while he waited for his next target to return from the wild goose chase he had sent him on.
Steve went home deciding it was some prankster. Steve unlocked the front door and walked in. Nothing seemed disturbed.
Mark was finished with his emergency and was told by the receptionist that his son had tried to call. Mark called home.
The phone rings and Steve answers “Lt. Steve Sloan.”
“Steve it’s your dad.”
“Hi Dad any idea when you’re coming home?”
“No Steve. Why don’t you order some..”
Just then Mark heard a noise and then the phone dropping.
“Steve, Steve! Answer me!”
“Mark what’s wrong?” asked Jesse who was passing the nurse’s station.
“There’s something wrong at the beach house! Call Captain Newman I’m heading home!”
“All right Mark!” Jesse yells but it’s too late Mark has already entered the elevator.
-----
Steve had been hit on the back of the head by a lead pipe by the intruder. Next the intruder walked outside and waited for his friends who had hidden themselves away. They parked the get-away car and helped carry Steve out. They were careful about leaving any clues. The only thing left had been Steve’s blood on the carpet.
-----
Mark and Captain Newman arrive at the beach house around the same time. They enter the beach house and look around. There’s no sign of Steve but the phone is off the hook.
Mark is the first one to notice blood on the carpet.
Captain Newman calls it in and the beach house is checked. They don’t come up with any clues except that Steve has disappeared.
Mark hears his cell phone ring and looks at the number. “It’s from Jesse.” He tells Captain Newman.
“Jess? What’s up we’re busy here. Steve is missing.”
“I know Mark.”
“What do you mean ‘you know’?”
“Mark that’s the reason I called. The kidnappers called here.”
“What do they want?”
“They want you to kill someone.”
“What?!”
“Yes they don’t care how you do it but they want it to look like an accident. If you don’t do it they say they’ll kill Steve.”
“Jess I won’t kill anyone..not even to save my son what am I going to do?”
“Mark we’ll find Steve…We have to!”
-----
“It doesn’t make sense. How can kidnappings of wealthy Malibu residents’ children and a ransom note for you to kill someone tie into together?” Amanda asked as they gathered in Mark’s office to discuss Steve’s kidnapping.
Mark was embarrassed to admit what he had done. He relayed to the others about appearing on this TV show against Steve’s better judgment. Steve had thought they were up to something.
The patient that Mark was supposed to kill was an elderly man who probably didn’t have long to live as it was. But that didn’t matter to Mark. He would not kill another human being even if it meant Steve’s life.
The patient was placed on 24-hour guard.
“Captain Newman could you see if there is a connection to the patient no matter how remotely to anyone who works at the TV station?”
“I’ll start working on it right away. It may take a while.”
“I hope not Captain because we don’t have a lot of time.”
A few hours later Captain Newman called Mark. “Mark we found a connection the elderly patient has a great nephew who’s a security guard at the TV station. He’s also heavily in debt. He’s a high-stakes gambler.”
“But why not ask for a ransom like the others instead of having Mark kill his great uncle in order to collect the insurance money?”
“I think when he heard that Mark was a doctor and his son a cop he couldn’t resist. He knew Mark was capable of dispensing drugs and no one would be the wiser. Also the police had busted him several times giving him a motive to seek revenge on a police officer.”
Captain Newman told Mark the address of the security guard. Mark told the captain he’d meet him there. Mark knew he was closer but he also knew Captain Newman and the other officers would be using their squad cars with the sirens blaring.
-----
Zeke Silversmith kept beating Steve repeatedly his buddies holding Steve. He was about to give Steve another punch to the stomach when Mark, Captain Newman and other police officers burst through the door. Mark took one look at the situation and decked Zeke. Captain Newman and the officers arrested Zeke and his cohorts.
Mark told Captain Newman to call an ambulance as he gently checked Steve’s injuries. Steve had been punched numerous times in his stomach. His head wound to the back of his head was bleeding again.
Several hours later Jesse came into the doctors’ lounge and told Mark how Steve was. He had a concussion. His right kidney was heavily bruised and his spleen had been lacerated. Steve would be sore for some time but he would recover.
Mark thanked Jesse and asked if he could see his son. Jesse led him to Steve’s room and told him that Steve would be asleep. Jesse had given Steve pain killers to help Steve relax so his body could get the rest it needed after his ordeal.
Mark walked into his son’s hospital room and just looked at his son. It felt so good to have his son back with him. Mark knew he had put his son’s life at risk by agreeing to be on the TV show after Steve had told him it wasn’t a very good idea.
Mark sat in the chair watching Steve sleep. There was time when Steve woke up for Mark to apologize for not listening to his son’s warning. While watching his son sleep Mark rubbed his hand. His knuckles had begun to hurt from decking Zeke but it had felt so good at the time. He knew that he should get his hand X-rayed but that could wait. All he wanted was to stay with his son.
Steve woke up and Mark got up and came closer to his bed. “Hi Steve. I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you son.”
“Dad it’s not your fault.” Steve says tiredly.
“Yes it is son. If I hadn’t appeared on that TV show I wouldn’t have put you at risk.” Mark says subconsciously rubbing his hand.
“Dad what’s wrong with your right hand?”
“Oh..it’s nothing Steve.”
“Out with it Dad.”
“I punched Zeke Silversmith.”
Steve smiled. “You punched some guy at your age?”
“Well Steve I saw what he and his friends had been doing to you and I couldn’t help myself. It just seemed natural.”
“Dad do me a favor and have Jesse look at your hand. Knowing you I’m sure you haven’t had that hand X-rayed. Probably too concerned waiting for me to wake up.”
“Steve…you do know me too well. But I just couldn’t leave you no matter how much it was hurting.”
“Dad I’ll be ok. Let Jesse examine your hand.”
“Are you sure Steve?”
“Well..I do ache a little but it will keep. Let Jesse take care of you.”
“Steve I’ll get someone to look after you until Jesse and I are finished.”
“Ok Dad. Take care. And next time Dad think before you injure yourself.”
“Ok Steve,” Mark says smiling in spite of the pain, “but I was thinking then.”
Steve smiled. Steve was beginning to hurt again but he wanted Mark out of his room so he could get his hand taken care of.
Mark walked out of his room and enlisted a doctor he saw walking down the hallway to go see his son while he went to Jesse to have his hand X-rayed.
The doctor examined Steve. Asked if he was allergic to medication and Steve said “no”. Then he asked how much he weighed and Steve told him. The doctor told him he would give a prescription to the pharmacist to fill. The doctor didn’t pay attention to what he had written when it came to Steve’s weight. He transferred the last two numbers. As a result the pharmacist gave Steve a prescription that was too high a dose for someone who had a concussion.
-----
Mark and Jesse were at X-rays. According to the X-rays Mark’s hand was not broken but it was sprained. Jesse wrapped Mark’s hand and asked how Steve was. Mark told him he wasn’t feeling well but asked another doctor to check him over while he and Jesse were busy here.
After Jesse was finished Mark walked back to Steve’s room.
Meanwhile a nurse had taken the medicine prescribed by the doctor to Steve. She handed it to Steve along with some water to drink.
Steve took the medicine that the nurse gave him along with a drink of water. By the time Mark came back into Steve’s room Steve had fallen asleep. Mark noticed his son sleeping peacefully. Mark started to yawn and decided that perhaps it would be ok if he too got some sleep. Mark knew he didn’t feel like driving home so he just went to the on call room and went to sleep.
The nurse giving Steve his routine check noticed the problems first. She had found her patient in a critical state. His breathing had become abnormal, his pulse rapid, his body temperature was high, and his pupils were enlarged. She immediately contacted Dr. Travis. Jesse rushed into Steve’s room. Within a few minutes of Jesse entering, Steve’s heart had fibrillated. Jesse orders code blue and the crash cart sent up to Steve’s room. Jesse starts performing CPR on Steve while he waited for the crash cart to come.
Mark had been awakened by the code blue signal. He knew it had been for his son. Somehow in the little time Mark had been away his son had gone into a critical state.
Mark rushed into Steve’s room where Jesse was now using the defibrillator. Mark was relieved that after Jesse had said “Clear” a couple of times and his son had not responded on the third try they were successful and Steve’s heart was beating normally. Steve was not out of the woods yet.
Steve was placed in ICU. Mark and Jesse were both astonished as to how Steve’s condition could have changed so drastically. Steve was doing remarkably well the last time they had seen him, and now they were in danger of losing him and they couldn’t figure out what had happened.
Jesse ordered blood tests to try and figure out the reason Steve’s condition had deteriorated so drastically. When they had come back Mark and Jesse didn’t know what to make of it. For some reason Steve had been given medicine in a dosage that was way too high for a person who had a concussion. When Steve was stable again they would both figure out how it could have happened. As it was, they knew there was a risk that Steve may go into a coma if the overdose wasn’t treated immediately.
Jesse gave Steve medicine to reverse the effects of the drug that Steve had been given. Afterwards Mark and Jesse both stayed with Steve until he was stable. Then they called for the nurse who had given Steve the overdose to come to ICU so they could talk to her. She told them that she had picked up the medicine from the pharmacist and had followed proper procedure. She didn’t know how Steve could have been given an overdose.
Mark and Jesse asked the nurse to stay in Steve’s room while they investigated. They went to the pharmacy and asked who had filled out the prescription for Steve Sloan. They talked to the pharmacist and he showed them the prescription. He had filled the order exactly as it was written. Mark and Jesse looked at the prescription. Right away they noticed the discrepancy when it came to Steve’s weight. The numbers had been transferred.
Next, they went to the doctor who Mark had asked to attend to Steve for a few minutes. Dr. John Martin. Mark asked him how he could make a mistake like that. Dr. Martin said it was just a simple mistake it could have happened to anyone. Mark chided him it didn’t just happen to anyone this mistake could have cost his son’s life, Jesse also admonished him for not checking Steve’s chart before he gave the prescription to the pharmacist.
Mark then told Dr. Martin that with Steve’s concussion he shouldn’t have been given anything stronger than aspirin. As a doctor he should have known this. Mark swears to Dr. Martin he was going to have him up on charges of medical malpractice.
Mark and Jesse went back to Steve’s room. They let the nurse know that it was not her fault that she had given Steve the wrong dosage. The doctor who had been in charge for a few minutes was to blame. She thanked Mark and Jesse. She had been worried that she had somehow been responsible for hurting Dr. Sloan’s son. Like so many nurses at the hospital she had noticed how handsome Steve was.
-----
Captain Newman came by and asked when Steve will be able to give his statement regarding Zeke Silversmith kidnapping and beating him. He was told that Steve had not been seriously hurt. Mark told Captain Newman about Steve being given the wrong medication and now he was in the ICU. Mark told Captain Newman that they were worried about Steve going into a coma. Jesse had given Steve an antidote they were just hoping that he would continue to improve.
When the defense attorney had heard that the main witness against her client had been seriously hurt she suggested requesting a speedy trial. It was her hope that Lt. Sloan would not be well enough to testify and therefore the prosecutor would be forced to drop the charges. Their main witness had been Steve. The others too afraid to testify.
-----
The next day Captain Newman went to see Mark and to tell him the latest development. He was glad to hear from Mark that Steve was now out of danger from going into a coma. Mark assured Captain Newman that Steve would be able to testify. He would most likely have to be in a wheelchair but he was positive his son could be there.
The day of Silversmith’s trial came. Steve was doing quite well. Jesse was so satisfied in his progress that he was intending to release him in a couple of days. He did authorize a medical release so that Steve could be taken to the courthouse. With an understanding that he used a wheelchair.
Steve wheeled himself to the stand and was sworn in. Before he started his testimony the judge announced to the jury that the witness appearing in a wheelchair should not have any influence in the jury’s decision.
Steve gave his testimony. Steve had appeared in court so many times he knew how to conduct himself. Next the defense tried to break him. Steve stayed firm in his testimony.
The defense tried a different tactic. The lawyer, Candace Thornton accused Steve of trying to win the jury’s sympathy by appearing in a wheelchair.
Steve adamantly denied the charge. He told the lawyer and everyone in the courthouse that the reason he was in a wheelchair was because a doctor had given him the wrong dosage of medicine.
The lawyer thought she had Steve then. “So you admit that you were not as injured as you claimed you were by my client. That he had nothing to do with your injuries?”
“That is not what I said and you know it, Ms. Thornton. Mr. Silversmith was responsible for my being kidnapped and he did beat me. Enough to have me hospitalized.”
The lawyer couldn’t think of any other tactic. Finally the case went to the jury.
Mark sat beside Steve. He knew his son had almost completely recovered, however until he had been given a clean bill of health the father in him would still worry. Mark knew that he would always worry about his son - it was his job. Mark took his job very seriously.
The jury came back and handed their decision to the judge. Everyone, except Steve had been required to stand. The judge, Mallory Thomas gave the jury’s verdict ‘guilty’ on all charges.
As Zeke Silversmith is led away he asks what about Dr. Sloan punching him. Judge Mallory Thomas tells him “Mr. Silversmith you are already facing a hefty sentence. Don’t make it worse by trying this court’s patience. Dr. Mark Sloan punch someone? Don’t be ridiculous. Dr. Mark Sloan would never hurt anyone.” Mark smiles angelically. Steve tries not to guffaw.
-----
A couple of days had passed and Jesse had pronounced Steve well enough to be discharged. Steve was waiting for his dad to come and drive him home. Steve didn’t know what was keeping his father.
Mark comes into Steve’s room. “Sorry I’m late Son I was just filing the necessary papers to start a medical review of Dr. Martin’s actions. I’m going ahead and having the doctor brought up on a charge of malpractice.”
“You’re very serious aren’t you Dad?”
“Yes I am Steve. If that nurse hadn’t had come into your room to check on you when she did it could have been too late. As it was it was almost too late anyway. I don’t want someone like Dr. Martin practicing medicine in this hospital or anywhere else.”
A review of Dr. Martin’s records revealed more evidence that the doctor was incompetent. How he had lasted at Community General for so long was a wonder to Mark.
Dr. Martin’s case came up. Mark testified of how he had almost caused the death of his son Steve and that Dr. John Martin was unfit to be a doctor here in Community General or anywhere else. The review board admired Mark. They had a lot of faith in his abilities. They knew he would not make a charge like this lightly. Dr. John Martin was convicted of malpractice and stripped of his license to practice medicine.
As he had heard the verdict, Dr. Martin- ex Dr. John Martin swore revenge “I’ll get you Dr. Sloan I’ll get you” he ranted.
The End?
Author’s Note: Special thanks to a friend of mine who had suggested Steve get hurt because of an incompetent doctor.
